94 850 Turbo Audio Wiring Color Codes

940 Turtle

Recommended Posts

Hello All:

I just got a 850 turbo... seems like the previous owner doesn't really know what he's doing and butched up all the wires. Can someone post the correct color codes so I can re-attach an aftermarket unit to it. I've figured out there is a red/black ( should be ignition but I have 2 of them, both have 12v when key is on), Yellow ( Constant 12v), black ( hopefully ground... should be pretty universal) , I'm not sure where is dimmer, antenna trigger, front tweets, front door, rear door, rear deck.... and hopefully nothing else....

Thanks in advance guys!

Pity that diagram has no relevance to the stereo's with factory amp.

I have not yet found any wiring diagrams online that show the wire colors for the factory amp. However, you can remove the speaker grilles (all of them come off easily) and them pull the speakers to see the wire color combinations.

Usually the front dash and doors are wired separately. The rear door and rear pillars (wagon) or shelf speakers (sedan) are wired together in parallel, using the same wire colors for both right rear speakers and another identical pair of wire colors for the left rear speakers.

It doesnt take long to pull the speakers to see the wire colors, and all you should need is a T-25 torx driver to remove the speakers from the doors. The dash and rear pillars are clipped in (I am not sure how the sedan rear shelf speakers are attached, as I have a wagon).

As I have mentioned to others, be aware of the speaker impedence ratings when installing an aftermarket head unit. Volvo mainly uses 8 ohm speakers paralleled together (fron door and dash together and rear door and rear shelf together), which produces a 4 ohm rating on the head unit amplifier. If you have aftermarket speakers (which will most likely be 4 or 2 ohm), then you will be producing a 2 or 1 ohm load respectively, and a 1 ohm load on a head unit amplifier is not a good idea). If you happen to wire incorrectly and end up wiring the speakers in series you will end up with a 16 ohm load which will not sound good. On a side note, since you have an amplifier already (factory amp), if you plan on using it with the new head unit, typically a 2ohm load is the lowest you should go. Only some of the top end aftermarket amplifiers will be rated stable at a 1 or 1/2 ohm rating, although almost all amplifiers and head units are stable at 2 ohms, but do not go lower unless they state they can or you risk damaging them. Just a few things to keep in mind...bestto be safe than sorry later.

There are 2 ignition +12V wires, and they both do the same thing. There are also 2 ground wires, doing the same thing. There is also a smaller black wire as well, which is not a ground (it is the rheostat or dimmer negative lead), but it is noticably smaller (16 or 18 gauge i think).

From other research the dimmer wire is labeled as a rheostat on the wiring diagram linked earlier. Although most head units have one wire for this, Volvo provides a + and - for this. but the Rheostat has been stated to be the dimmer control. There is also one for the power attenna.

I found a diagram for stereos with the amp, however it is a little tricky to follow. Biggest problem with pulling out speakers and tracing the speaker wire colours back to the source, is that I found the wires go through a connector, and the wiring changes. This is documented on the diagram also.
