Proper torque specs

and correct material, thread pitch, length, etc.

i've got studs on my front wheels.....no problems, except that two of the 10 I got were useless and didn't thread into the hubs.....haven't really put them to the test yet though.

To make things easier.

Where did you purchase them?

idono i just like not having studs... i never lose the bolts but always lose the nuts for some reason. plus i can just throw the tire on without worrying about hitting the studs. Its nice to have just bolts when you are working on a lift in my opinion!

You can put the wheel over the studs and they will support its weight and the wheel will not fall off. That makes your hands free to put and tighten the lug nuts. There are also issues of lining the holes up when you have multi bolt pattern wheels and no guide stud to hold the rotor in place on the hub. Add some hubcentric rings and you are bound to have a fit.

But is it really worth it just for that tiny advantage?

also, if you let the wheel hang at an angle on the studs (like i've seen people do while putting on lug nuts) it will scratch the inside of the lug holes on the wheel and and sometimes flatten the threads of the studs slightly

Yes, price may be an issue. However, do you find it easy to take the wheels on and off the car or do you get frustrated with the wheel coming off of the hub and banging into the caliper and rotor? You can also use the IPD solution for $20. The whole set up will cost me less than $80 and will include black crome lug nuts. I dont think I can find wheels bolts (12mmx1.75) in black. How about the issue with aftermarket wheels, hubcentric rings, and no guide stud to keep the rotor alligned with the holes in the hub. What about people who take their car to the track and need to swap out brake pads and bleed the breaking system.

At that price its not bad. but i cant say i've ever had a wheel fall and hang on the caliper or rotor or had any problem lining up the holes. In fact I think the bolts are easier to deal with because you dont have to worry about grinding the wheel against the studs as you put it on, so you can throw it on faster, hold it on with one hand and thread the bolts with the other.

black chrome lug nuts do sound nice though, and considering you would pay $120 for all new stock ones from volvo its not a bad deal

I never had a wheel fall and rest on the caliper and/or rotor either. However, I did have wheels fall and hit caliper and/or rotor and damage the finish on the inside of the wheel and sometims chip the paint on the caliper. As far as the threads on the studs are concerned, they are not that britle and once the wheel mounting holes are over the studs there is not much space between the side of the hole and the side of the stud so the wheel does not have enough momentum and wight to fall on the studs and cause damage to the threads. If they get damaged for some reason they can be easily replaced with new ones. The inside of the wheel mounting holes will always get tarnished by the very nature of being wedged between the fastener and the hub. The inside of you mounting holes are only seen when the wheels are off the car. Once the wheels are back on the car, the lug bolts or lug nuts make them not visible. The exception may be with wheels that have deep mounting holes like pegs. In any event , you can always cause damage by not being careful, careless or just plain tired and unfocused regardless of the set up.

I ordered mine from Kaplhenke, but I wouldn't order from them again. they sent me two defective studs, and then he was trying to tell me that I wasn't installing them correctly. I mean, if they don't thread in with a normal amount of force, then they are bad...i'm not going to sit there for an hour and force them into my hubs.

then i said that I wanted two new ones, and I would send the defective, unused ones back, and he said he really didn't want to do it since he had already lost money on making the studs and doing a group buy on them. how the hell is that my fault....you send me defective studs, so you better replace them, at your cost, even if it's out of your pocket....i could care less.

well, after about 6 months, we got the clearance to send the defective ones back, and then get two new ones, although I haven't seen the new ones personally. If I find that he sent me the same defective ones again, then I am going after him. It's just a few bucks, but for some reason, I just have my doubts that he sent me actual replacements.....I hope he was man enough to do it right though.

there have been a few people who have done studs, meh waste of $ imo...

put wheel on, use knee's to hold wheel, insert small flat blade screwdriver, center wheel on hub, thread in 1 or 2 lugs...done

or just get those things IPD sells, just like a piece of threaded rod to center the wheel and hold it in place

There are also issues of ... no guide stud to hold the rotor in place on the hub..

?.. there should be one. 4 out of 5 non-bolt holes in the back of the volvo wheels have protruding pins, the 5th empty hole is where the rotor guide pin should go..
