M3

Recommended Posts

OK, lots of LOLing going-on while I read this thread. As far as M3s go, why not? The 95 is well-liked because it is OBDI. 96 and up are OBDII. Modding the OBDI engine is easier. However, one can retrofit OBDI on an OBDII car. Additionally, the 96+ engines were 3.2L, where the 95s were 3.0L. These cars aren't new any more. Parts aren't cheap, but they really aren't very expensive either. They are fairly easy to work on, particularly the suspension/brakes. As with any 10+ year old car, maintenance is key. You will pay a little more for a car with documented service history, but you will likely spend less bringing her up to snuff. Reliability is directly related to service/maintenance. You will spend a lot of money on a neglected car (regardless of manufacture). As far as performance, my 98 V70 T5m is just as fast in a straight line (rolling) as a stock E36 M3. However, the E36 chassis handles very well - from the factory. Just some springs/shocks/strut inserts/sways will make a world of a difference. 235s all around on 8" wheels fit without drama. The after market is rather abundant, and everything has been tried by fellow enthusiasts - so there's little guesswork when mod time comes. On the highway, they are rather efficient (for a sports car). Figure ~28mpg highway, 19-21 around town. I was going to get an E36 M3 sedan (5 speed, of course), but decided to go with a wagon instead. If the US had imported E36 wagons, I'd likely have a 328 touring instead of the V70. Good luck!
