bmx9854
What are the symptoms of an ABS unit failure vs. the wheel speed sensors lighting up the ABS light? I can feel a vibration through the pedal sometimes (during and not during braking), then the light comes on.Thanks

Ozark Lee
On a '96 there is a 99% chance the ABS module is failing. You can spend $100 getting it diagnosed or you can spend a fuzz more and just get it rebuilt and be done with it.If you are bold and know how to solder you can fix it yourself....Lee

T5power
How do you "feel a vibration" through the pedal "not during braking"?What are the codes?it's the master cylinder checking itself, and then the lights come on. mine does the same thing, althought i have yet to fix the ABS module. it makes me wonder if you still hear the sound once the module is fixed. Yes... You will always here it in these cars. It is the ABS performing a check. He did not specify that. There are quite a few things this could be beyond the wheel sensors. Including the pesky brake switch.Need the codes.

matt b
The modules don't always fail in the same way: my 97 was a pulsating pedal at random times while the car was driven. It could be when you were hitting the brakes or at random times, it was unpredictable and dangerous. My 96 was just a light and absolutely no ABS at all. You could lock up all 4 wheels.I got both modules fixed by BBA Reman in New England. Each repair cost me $130, from door to door, including all insurance, handling, etc.... I'd do it again in a heartbeat.I took the 97 off the road when I repaired the module but the 96 was driven for a few days with just a zip lock bag duct taped to that area of the engine bay. No issues.Hope this helps, PM me if you need more details.
