Modus
This is from a 98S70GLT after 24000 miles of driving. Or about 100 fill ups.Inside of a Bosch fuel filter. After letting it dry out, cutting it open and unraveling the 15 feet of paper I saw this. Very fine dirt trapped between the pleats in the paper.Just one of those things to see how dirty it was gonna be.

snookwhaler
Yea man... Those damn things really work. Whenever I remove one I cap both ends. While the fuel is still in there, give it a love tap on the ground, then remove one of the caps. The liquid coming out is black all the way to the end. Even in as little as 5,000 miles.I have been cutting fuel, eng. oil and trans. oil filters open for years. It also shows you how cheap or how well different brands of filters are made and how the media traps the debris. The difference in quality is quite dramatic. Especially in oil filters. There is some cheap stuff out there.

matt b
how did you open up the filter? i just replaced my fuel filter and i'd love to see how much doo doo is in thereThe top is easy to cut off, just below the lip.I tried blowing through mine on the 96, and I'm pretty sure the fuel filter had 215,000 miles on it.... :(
Modus
how did you open up the filter? i just replaced my fuel filter and i'd love to see how much doo doo is in thereStick it in a vise and cut with a hack saw around the formed lip on one side, turning after you cut through. After that it's simple just pull. you'll find the wrapped paper around a plastic core with a plastic cover plate inside. Of course do a well ventilated area. And unreavle the 15 feet of paper, and wola.

KlausC
You guys are lucky. The 850/S70 is a piece of cake replacing the filter. Did that on my 1995.I can just barely see the one on my V70 with awd. It is under the trunk, above the rear axle, and next to the spring and shock. The access plate does not give access A royal PITA, I think mine has 152K miles on it! It certainly looks original.

Removed access plate in trunk(to remove retention bracket), push seats forward, remove trunk cover slide thing (4 bolts), then remove second access plate (to get to the back end of the filter). Undue fuel lines which had only a little fuel in it, pull filter out from back end and replace in opposite direction. What a PITA that was. good luck. JBVolvo
Use a blow torch, and you'll end up as a Darwin award. you could have the same result with a hack saw if it makes a spark and theres still vapor trapped inside. be careful cutting them open!
