Can anyone recommend a reliable good sounding

cassette for an 850

One with Dolby B

Seems like cassette players harder to find nowadays

Also what brand of speakers are able to

replace the front of an 850- a component speaker and

tweeter combo

Many thanks

ok... someone's going to say it... What's a "cassette"? Are those the things with the tape inside the little plastic thingies? Don't even waste your time with a cassette deck man! For probably 20 bucks more you can get a cd player.... They're so cool! You can instantly skip to the next song.. it's AMAZING... haha..

As for the speakers, any one of the big stores or your local stereo shop can tell you that... Sounddomain is a great resource to check out as well.

I've got an OEM SC-810 volvo cassette deck... You get the fit, look, and quality of OEM, and have your cassette functions :P Of course, it was promptly ripped out for my cd deck and changer... so now the sc-810 looks nice on my shelf. PM me if you wanna make an offer for it :pizza:

EXCUSE ME FOR LIVING

CD's blow man. Wait until everything is out on SACD and DVD

audio. Then you throw away all of that gear too.

I am not a millionaire like you I guess. I have a Volvo mainly because

they last a long time I am a working stiff and can't go buying all the

latest technology. My main reason is I like to make mixed tapes. I also

prefer the sound honestly. I borrow people's CD and make tapes

Surely there is still a good manufacturer. I know Alpine makes one but

for some reason I don't think it has dolby B NR.

BING do you have any ideas for a tape deck?

What about speakers. I know you like kick panels but what would

you install in the 850 factory areas if you had to?

The Alpine TDM-7582 is around 125 bucks.

The Alpine CDM-9821 is around 110 bucks.

Thank god I'm a millionaire.

PS. I have a Volvo too.

PS. I work hard

PS. Mixed tapes are for little girls who were in 5th grade. (fifteen years ago)

PS. Tapes do not sound better than Cd's.

PS. Cd's have been out for almost 20 years, thus making them not the "latest technology."

PS. When SACD and DVD audio come out. You won't be able to afford it anyway.

Good luck with your tapes man.

and a warm welcome to Guest John

Yeah, '98S70R lay off man.

IMO, any casette deck made my a reputable company will suit your needs. As far as front door replacement speakers, I know that infinity makes a set of 5.25" speakers for our doors that come with a crossover and tweeters that are good. Most of the guys on the board however only have a single set of speakers in the front (most have infinity references, and will tell you that they are good enough). I myself only run two infinity refs. and a sub in the back. So basically any 5.25" speakers will fit into your doors. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

I think that some folks prefer the warmer sound of tapes to CD.  Its a completely analog recording unlike the 1's and 0's on a digital track.

But those 1's and 0's are just a recording that doesn't change... tapes degrade over time, and digital recordings don't -- that's the appeal... The 1's and 0's can be manipulated to sound however you wish... If an artist wants warm tones, then they can record that way...

I could never understand that "warm" or "real" argument because it's not the recording -- but it's the degredation of the medium -- that's not part of the music. A CD is a permanent record of how the artist intended the record to be.

Thank you for the info. The dealer that I would get from

sells only Alpine, MB quart and Boston Acoustics speakers

Alpine and Clarion only option for head units at this dealer

Any suggestion out of this lineup. Also since you have only

2 front speakers and a sub are you against component speakers

in the front and 6 x 9 in the rear deck. I would look to amplify the

rear deck

Thanks again so much for info, experience

My exact situation is that I don't really like the sound of CD's but it is also

financial. I have a home tape deck and a home CD but not a CD recorder. I cannot see getting a CD recorder when my tape deck is in really good condition. I like to make mixed artist recordings for the car (variety) and my Volvo stock speakers

really sound like crap and the OEM tape deck is shot is a crummy tape

deck mechanically. If it is Alpine made *SC-710" is the model- I would look to stay away from Alpine. This leaves Clarion which I know nothing about

I have heard that Boston Acoustics are good but I do not know that much about

them.

John, BA speakers are awesome...as are MB Quart. That's what I would pick from. With MB slightly ahead. my. .02

I've got a set of bostons that I like a lot. I've never used MB myself, but I've heard a lot of systems that use them, and they're excellent speakers, as well.

if you're only gonna amp a pair of speakers, do the fronts... You want your better speakers up in the front stage -- and an overpowering rear fill is just poo.

I have been happy with Alpine head units, but alas, I only do cds. I cannot comment on their tape mechanisms. Clarion has some nice units -- but I like the Alpines more... Again, that does not take into account tape functions in either brand.

That is really cracking me up. Can you explain the rear fill being poo.

It seems to me that if I amp the back and drive those the much and

fill with the forward speakers I'd be better off

It really is like Bing says the stock locations are SO bad. I mean the left speaker

is right on top of you. That to me is why I feel the component tweeters are so important to an 850

I have a lot to learn but I am without tunes at present so their is urgency

Again though that is the funniest thing I've read in a while

ask bing... the best setup is a good front-stage with NOTHING in the rear. At most, you want rear *fill*.. not "oh my god all the sound is behind me" :o

but whatever, you can stick with crappy front speakers, overpowering rears, and your craptastical casettes :monkey:

Maybe I'm being harsh, but I think it's funny that you are telling me that I'm backwards, when, well, there's no nice way to end that sentence, so good night
