Hello all,

As I was driving home today, the car all of a sudden started to surge and then stumbled followed by heavy shaking. All the while, the CEL kept flashing. I continued to drive it home since I was only a few miles away. It continued to shake during acceleration and not a lot of power. When I got home and got out of the car, I noticed a foul smell like the smoke from fireworks. I checked the OBD and pulled 2 codes, p0304 and P0234. I'm not sure if they are related but one is a misfire in cyl #4 while the other is a max turbo boost. After reading a number of posts, it looks like I'll have to replace the TCV and ignition coil.

Does anybody know where I can get the TCV? Are there any aftermarket ones that may be better? As for the ignition coil, can someone tell me which one is cyl#4.

I appreciate any help you can give me. The car is dead until I replace these parts. TIA.

The TCV is all of $40 from Volvo IIRC. IPD does have an upgraded one coming out for $80ish, I built my own for less. You can simply bypass it and wait until you have the new one.

The ignition coil code is causing most of your problem.

Thanks. I will address the misfire problem so I can at least drive the car while waiting for the TCV like you suggested. By the way, do you know where cyl #4 is? Is it 2nd from right or left as your facing the car? I'm going to have to check and see if it is the plug or the coil. I have Denso Iridium plugs that has about 30K on it. Thanks again.

I sent lucky a pm 2day,lol,cos he has em without the brackets for less i think. like 70$

That's actually a reasonble price, it's a standard industrial solenoid. The trouble is the bracket + the connector (I simply hacked the connector off my old TCV).

The Iridium plugs may very well be your problem- they don't work real well in forced-induction engines. A copper plug is the best route (if you can deal with the replacement interval).

I just want to report back. I replaced the spark plugs with regular copper plugs. That did not fix the problem. I did not think that would fix the misfire, but I wanted to try out the copper plugs. I replaced the ignition coil, cyl #4. That fixed the problem. It was indeed a bad coil. By the way, cyl #4 is the 2nd cylinder from the driver's side end. I was going to do a trial and error in figuring which one it is. First try and it worked.

I will pick up the TCV from the dealer tomorrow. Thanks all.
