No Cold Air From Ac

X Man

Recommended Posts

My '99 S70 GLT currently won't cool the cabin although I had the dealer replace the "incabin temperature sensor" last April ('07). The AC was working marginally and in May '07 a different mechanic (self-proclaimed "Volvo Specialist" -- who reamed me for some other work) had recommended a re-charge on the AC (along w/ a ton of other stuff). I bought an IDS recharging kit and tried to charge the system except that the gauge showed that the system had enough charge. W/ the AC running on full (90 degree weather), the gauge would show the pressure ranging between 65% (overcharged) when it would click and drop down to 25% when it clicked again. After about 3 minutes the pressure would click between 25% and 45% (properly charged range) but there is still no cold air coming out of the vents.

Anyone got ideas about what might be going on and what I might be able to do about it? TIA

similar thing happened to me last year, I needed a new compressor.

ouch! I am guessing that to be a few $$$

Unfortunately, I won't be able to get my trusted mechanic to look at it for nearly 2 weeks (our schedules are locked up) and we are experiencing a heat wave (July-type weather) right now. Thanks for replying, hopefully someone else might know something else I can check first ...

oh god, i feel your pain. I did a brake job on my friend's car today and replaced one of my axles and almost had a heat stroke. I felt like I was breathing in water with every breath because it was so humid.

Does your a/c clutch engage? I guess it does if you say it's clicking but does it stay engaged when you first turn it on for like 8 minutes and then start clicking on and off? how was your a/c a couple weeks ago?

I would go on the for sale forum and look for people parting out cars. Justin might have one since I think he has taken out his compressor and power steering pump for moar powr. His screenname is Zohan unless his flavor of the month dictated a new one

My car's ac clutch does not stay in engaged sometimes.

This seems to happen whenever I am accelerating OR stuck in stop-and-go traffic for a little while.

Does this have anything to do with my battery?

Will it help if I install a ground-wire kit or some device to keep the eletric current steady at all times?

What areas shall I look into?

Honestly ...it seems like a charge issue to me. I really do not recommend the self install kits. One more note on a 90 degree day that compressor probably should not cycle like that either. Perhaps you just need a professional evac and recharge with some dye added.

If your compressor is cycling you probably have a low charge caused by a leaking A/C evaporator. I have done over 40 of these. Your best bet is to have a reputable shop perform a proper evacuate and recharge with A/C Dye. This will allow them to find if the evaporator is leaking and this will let you know if your compressor clutch is ok.

That is really being a friend.

The clutch doesn't seem to engage for any length of time (click ... click). Hopefully my mechanic will be able to do some of his magic to it.

Thanks Matt, I'll get that done (evac/recharge w/ dye).

I have a similar problem, except my A/C works amazing for a short while and then doesn't work at all after ~15 minutes. The fan still blows, but it's as if it just stops cooling the air when it "gets tired" lol. Anyone have an idea what this could be?

1999 s70 t5 btw...

That is symptomatic of the A/C clutch. Mine was replaced about 6 months ago. I discovered that most shops are technically incompetent to replace just the clutch and would offer to only replace the entire compressor for $700+. I finally found a good indie joint that did the clutch for around $300.

$300 for a clutch???? I'm sure they were quite happy to do it.... Did they at least kiss you first???

Anyway, It could alse be overcharged, or you could have a clogged orifice, but from what you describe it is slightly undercharged.

I do not know the how the percentages line up with over/under charge and normal, but something definately doesn't sound right. Have someone familiar with A/C systems take a look at it.

Take a look at the posts on AC shims. If your mileage is about 100k the clutch could be worn down. Removing a shim or two(washers) could bring the gap into spec. I think the hint is in the hot air during hard accel.
