Any Interest?

Just found out a local car detailing/upholstering shop has been recovering x70 door panels for some time.

I got a bad panel from the junk yard the other day (would be equivalent to my car's right passenger door panel) and took it down there... $35 to recover it with fine quality leather look-alike with a stitch through the panel. It should look very nice when done and I plan on taking a picture and posting it here. So, if 4 are done that would be $140 to do the job. A variety of different materials are available including real leather (cow hide, swede, even alligator skin, etc.) but for a steep jump in price depending on what is selected. There would be numerous choices available and I would have a price list for whatever their choice is along with pictures of what the material looks like. For the first one (above) I went with my beige interior color- trying to match my original door panels as close as possible but with a leather texture (sort of like what's in the P2 cars), but that's just one of many many choices.

How many would be interested in a so called "group buy" to have this done?

The bottle neck of course is the shipping of 4 panels to me and then back to you. Turn-around time would be within a week.

So, I if there is interest I need suggestions on shipping to and from Knoxville, TN (37918). If only these would fit in a USPS large priority box, shipping would be reasonable, but I don't think they would.

Suggestions and any comments are desired!

Does this include disassembling and reassembling the panels? If it does, what is the price if we disassemble the panels ourselves? That would save a lot on shipping costs.

agreed it would super cheap to ship then and would be worth while doing

Ok...great suggestions but when I took a panel down to the local place it was pretty much "disassembled." At least it was to the point that I would consider disassembled. It however still had some of the surround in place that extends beyond the part of the panel that is actually recovered. My understanding is that the front door panels are even bulkier in their "dissassembled" state. Maybe some clarification by someone would be helpful. Remember that we aren't talking about 850 panels here.

Certainly I can't come to your house to disassemble your door panels...that would be up to you, plus packing them and shipping them. Conceivably I can post up a pictorial or even a video of how this is done and to what extent of disassembly would be needed prior to shipping. I already had it in mind that the panels would be sent in the barest form possible to save on shipping costs...still it might not be cheap to send them.

That's good....in fact that's great :o ....keep stuff coming. ;) We need a "standard" as to what "dissassembling" these means and I think the second picture by Zohan pretty much shows the "bare state" that would be required before they can be shipped. The fronts seem to have more bulk than the rear panels and is slightly heavier due to the speaker grille.

Now, my question is, can these all be stacked together so they would take up less room in a package, and does the post office have a Priority Mail Box that the 4 would fit in? If not, would 2 fit and you ship off 2 boxes? I believe the most a Priority box costs is about $12 up to 70 Lbs, thus I ask. If they will all fit, then even with insurance (going and coming) we're looking at $30 or so for total shipping and this would be reasonable.

In the end, we also need recommendations on what glue to use to put the panels back together before they go in the car.

Zohan, if you've got these laying around, how about do 2 fronts and 2 rears and stack them and see what the deminsions are and report back...I want to get an idea of size...also if you have scales (doubtful) I'd like to know a rough approximation of weight.

Oh, and don't pull the delaminated vinyl off...one of the options I was thinking of was stitching over the vinyl for even a cheaper fix (for those who want it)...you splice in a piece...like this guy did in Brazil:

With this method you can even have spliced in a contrasting color and/or texture if you wanted (even snake skin)

This is good news! Thanks for starting this thread and the process MIJ. Keep the info coming.

Yes, let's keep this going.

I called and talked to a USPS representative and got the answer that there really is no way to print a return label unless we are a "business." Even if you use Ship-n-Click and can print a label from the other person back to you it's only good for 3 days- about the time it might take to get your package to me. It appears that FedEx might be our best bet. I know I could go to the Post office and ship one of these back one at a time after the work is done but I was hoping for a simpler solution that wouldn't eat up a lot of my time. Guess in the worst case scenario, whoever pays for this service can tack on what return postage would cost and I could wait in the post office line...or use Ship-n-Click from my home.

Does anyone have the approx. weight and dimensions for 4 of these panels yet???
