northmiler89
I have been around here long enough that I SHOULD know this, but am confused at the moment:Found a 1996 850R locally with a blown headgasket. What is involved with the repair on this? If the HG has gone does it need the whole top end either inspected or repaired and a new bottom end? More work than that? Less? The price is good enough that I COULD just get it and drop a donor engine in. Just trying to get a baseline of what I am looking for here.I am going to call the owner tommorow.Glad to be back!Thanks!-Brandon
Dmsee
It all depends, did car overheat? if not then replace the headgasket.
Chilled man
Worss comes to worse new engine I would pull the head and take a flat bar and if its not warped just pop in a new gasket and go. If its warped check both sides bock and head and replace whats messed up.
northmiler89
Alright, I guess I need to get some details from the owner. The price is super cheap so I would assume it needs an engine. Either way I think I am going to pick it up. Debating between it and what looks like a dark blue s70t5M with a pretty mint interior that "Needs a new computer. It blew out."...lol.. If all that sucker needs is an ECU I will be all over that beast! Hell maybe get them both. Thanks for the info so far!

northmiler89
you looking for a project car ?is that mazda still your DD ?A project that I can fix up with a bit of work then DD. Mazda needs to come off the road. Too many miles on it already and I dont EVER want to drive it in the winter again. I hate how rough New England winters are on cars.Computer blew out? Thats weirdROFL.. Yea, this will be interesting. My guess is water damage, but who knows. The car is on steelies and the drivers door looks like it may be tweaked. But it has some potential and the price is right.

northmiler89
Just got this response from the person who listed the car with the bad ECU:"your best bet is to come see it. the guy i got it from said the computer went bad. volvo told him 1500 to fix it, so he dumped the car. the engine, trans., and turbo work. 5 speed manual, rare car as you know." northmiler89
BTW- If anyone comes across a swappable engine for sale, please let me know! Preferably something with lower milage, but of course beggers cant be choosers.I will most likely be looking for someone to do the swap with me or for me in the Mass/RI/CT area.. So if your interested, holla..lol
