Water Pump Change "how To"?

looks like my H2O pump is gone. The other day I came out to the car to see a very small puddle of "rusty" looking water under the car below the water pump. I dont know if the volvo pumps are like chevy's pumps where if the "weep hole" leaks a little bit, its time to replace it.

When driving I noticed that the car will not come up to temp unless its sitting in traffic and then it goes WAY down as soon as the car is moving again. At first Ithought it might be a sticky thermostat but that wouldnt explain the small leak and the low temp. Usually a sticky thermostat will make the car run hot, not cold.

So a couple of questions.

1) Where is the best place to get a new pump?

2) How hard is it to swap out? I consider myself good wth the wrences so its not my first rodeo swapping a pump, just the first time on a volvo.

3) Is there a walkthrough anywhere I can take a look at?

Any input woul be apreciated.

Dont just assume its the pump. There are other coolant hoses in the vicinity of the water pump that could be leaking to the same spot on the ground. You need to look around for leaks.

Have you checked your ECT sensor?

What is the ECT sensor? How would I know if its bad if I am not getting any lights in the dash?

all the hoses look good and there is no accumulation of water and any of the joints. In most cases I have delt with, the small puddle and then odd readings on the temp gauge usually say its the pump. But like I said, this is the first time I have dealt with a volvo water pump.

The ECT sensor is the coolant temperature sensor. It screws into the bottom of the thermostat housing. My ECT sensor is bad and it is causing my temp gauge to fluctuate like you described. It goes up and down even after the car is warmed up.

Did you check ALL of the coolant hoses? Did you get under the car and see the water pump leaking? Water pump leaks arent THAT common on these cars to my knowledge, which is why I am doubtful.

How many miles are on your car? When (if ever) was the water pump last changed?

BTW, you will have to remove the timing belt to replace the water pump. If you decide to replace the water pump, you should buy new bolts and a new gasket as well.

Good news is that I just remembered I have a new water pump I bought for no apparent reason a couple years ago. I just have to locate it now! LOL! to pull the timing belt, dont I need one of those tools to hold the cams in place?

You dont need it if you mark the cams. I used one just to make things easier, but I marked the cams as well.

I am not 100% sure how to test the ECT, you will have to search or wait for someone else to chime in.

ECT fauilure would not give you a leak, just random temperature readings and/or other random running issues. From the description, sounds as if the temp readings are in fact consistent - warm at slow speeds, cold at high speed. ECT would be all over the place, not repeatable readings. The water pump seldom leaks, but I had one that did, and it only had 20k on it, so it does happen. Mine was a defective bearing that caused the leak from excessive movement. Still, pretty unusual, so I'd be looking for other sources first. If you pull the timing belt cover (easy, you will get a much better look at the whole area where the water pump is located, and can even run the car with the cover off to see if there is any sign of leakage. No uncommon leaks in the same area include leaking seam on the overflow reservoir (often on bottom and out of sight), leak where the very small hose from teh thermostat housing th overflow tank attaches on thermostat housing end (either getting slighty loose, of cracking). That hose is to allow the cooling system to bleed itself of excess air, and is open to full pressure of the system. I had one leak from being slightly loose (just added a small clamp) and couldn't see the leak from any normal viewing angle - had to really look closely because the fluid can run down in a crack that is just about hidden from above. Final question: you said a puddle of rusty water. are you sure it is radiator fluid? That would normally create a green puddle unless the system is very poorly maintained.
