So my girl has been driving my 01' S60 T5 for a short time and two days ago the engine service light came on so she just took it to volvo to get it fixed and this is what they said.

1. Replace cracked ignition coils & spark plugs $750.00

2. Replace broken r/f upper strut mount & leaking strut $700.00

3. Replace leaking turbo drain tube seals $170.00

4. Perform transmission fluid exhange with synthetic fluid $400.00

what can I do myself and how much should it really cost..I already found the turbo drain seals from ipd for $8 and it should take me 30mins to put in..but should the trans fluid really be $400? and cracked ignition coils + spark plugs $750 really anyone what any knowledge on this let me know..

This is what my car sounded like when I finally got to it.

Your paying for labor and dealer prices on parts. What you can do yourself depends on your comfort level and access to tools. Anyone in your area willing to help you out? Looked for these parts online?

new coils can be had for $65~ a piece, u can do the change in 20 minutes. if you can find a reputable tranny shop that will guarantee synthetic fluid change it shouldn't cost you more then $100. you could do the change yourself and just buy some synth fluid. upper strut mount might be a little hard, but if u can find a good buddy and get your hands on a spring compressor then you can buy the strut and replace it. all those are possible do it yourselfers if you're somewhat capable with tools and a basic knowledge of what you're doing. theres a lot of write ups you can follow also to help, or get directions from other members here. thos prices are rediculous from the stealership

I do not know your capabilities or what tools you have but if it was me I would do 1-3 myself and then find a reputable shop for number 4.

I'm confident if you have just basic mechanical knowledge you can avoid getting raped!

I really wish the best for you and GF and post up if you have any questions

If you need Discounted prices on OEM parts, don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

The coils can be had, brand new for $300 and the plugs are not more than $20.

No, the tranny fluid should not be $400 and the strut issue shouldn't be anywhere near $700.

All of it can be done cheaper, if you goto a dealer then you gotta to get to know them very well and make friends. Its the difference between... "you need 4 new rotors and pads" vs "its really only the front pads and you can probably get away with it till next service".

When was the spark plugs done last?, susp sucks on the car so i wouldnt be surprised on that account you havent seen this before several times lol. If you can do the turbo thing yourself then do it, and fuck the tranny recommendation. There adding that in probably even though it wouldnt hurt. Find a local volvo guy around town with a rate at more than half per hour less.

dealers overcharge for parts and servicing and exactly true, my mech will say, u can get away with that till next service n shit but importants things must be done even if they pay for em themselves and i pay em later.

Funny thing, when they were putting in my boost gauge he took it for a spin and said ur wipers r fucked , let me change them on the house, can't have u driving with bad wipers, i think they r like 22$ a wiper, he put em on no charge.

It's total garbage. By the way, the service light doesn't come on if something is wrong. It's just a reminder light. If it was a check engine light, that's different.

I don't think you can do a full synthetic flush for $100 as someone else said, at least not around here. I would expect closer to $150 at an indie shop. I'm not a mechanic by any means but I could probably do the first three with information from the good folks here. You can rent a spring compressor for free from Autozone. I could probably do #4 too, but dealing with the fluid waste and mess is a pain. If you don't know when the tranny has been flushed last, it would be a very good thing to do.

First off it's been determined and proven the Volvo fluid is NOT synthetic. Get the same fluid, JWS 3309 spec, which is Mobil 3309 from either a Toyota dealer ($5 per quart) or from a Mobil distributor for $50 -12 case quart. Do several drain and fills and call it a day.

If you truly need coils, then buy them for $65 apiece and get plugs (I used plain Jane Champion Plats - with rebates cost 70 Cents apiece at Pepboys right now. It's a real easy job and I know since I have done it and I am no genius.

Stuts I couldn't attempt though. You just knocked off $600 easily with those two items.
