Mig Vs. Tig On 404 Stainless

Recommended Posts

So i'm finally looking into getting a custom turbo back exhaust. The ones online sure are pretty (CJ's are tits!) but they are expensive.

So i called the local Meineke and talked to the guy over there. He gave me the usual "well i don't know if 3" pipe will fit in there blah blah blah and i told him it sure would etc etc.) I'm not going to bore you guys and waste time finding out details i can search for but i do have a question.

I was looking for a price. I asked him roughly what it would cost if i supplied all the pieces (get a kit from JEGS, 2 o2 bungs (like .50 each on ebay race cat and the rest). He said it would just be labor at $90 an hour, probably take him 5 hours he said. so that's $450 off the bat, plus say maybe 300 for all the bits... still not bad for a full turbo back exhaust.

Then i kept asking questions like the semi educated consumer i like to think i am and he told me that they don't TIG weld, he'd do it for me in 404 stainless (which is what we were talking about, maybe not the best choice IDK, i'll search on that later) and MIG weld it together.

Is this no bueno? I'm not educated on types of welding best for certain materials, but i was under the impression that when dealing with stainless (or maybe aluminzed stainless) that TIG was the way to go. What exactly is the story with this? From what i had read here, I figured the whole thing should be TIG welded, which is why i was looking towards a shop. I've done MIG welding a couple times, the results are not pretty, but i can stick metal to metal well enough. Can some please enlighten me?

Danke guys!

PM me if you want a price on the materials. I can provide you with all of the parts if you want. 304 stainless not 404. IIRC 404 is not as rust resistant. I stock all of the pieces including the metal, or ceramic cats.

but what's the deal with TIG vs. MIG welding on 304 stainless? Can it be MIG welded together or maybe more to the point would MIG be a bad choice as opposed to TIG? I'm just trying to figure out what the functional difference would be between the two types.

TIG is more refined and gets better penetration. Properly welded with a MIG will work fine, but will not look as nice. They produce a bulkier weld to do the equivalent job.
