99 V70 Coolant Leak

i have a 1999 V70 GLT with slight coolant leak that only seems to happen when i run the AC for extended periods of time. i did a pressure test of the coolant system and it only dropped from 15 psi to just above 14 psi after a half an hour and my mechanic (also my brother) says that isnt a big deal. I replaced the cap for the coolant tank and that seemed to help. but after a trip from the bay area to the sacramento area (140 miles) the next morning the coolant was just low enough to make the warning light come on.

just wondering if anyone has experienced this or knows of a cause/solution?

well where is it dripping ? ;)

thats the thing it doesnt drip coolant anywhere, i have checked the hoses and they all look good. the only issues i have ever had was that the thermostat failed and then caused the heater core to fail about six months ago. heater works just fine and the coolant temperature never goes above the halfway mark.

no coolant anywhere inside the car. changed the oil a couple of weeks ago, checked it today and it is still clean and clear.

the low coolant warning can take anywhere from a few days to almost two weeks before it comes on. it is only after the engine has cooled down overnight and then the level is only just low enough to make the warning light come on. also it hasnt ever come on while i have been driving.

no check engine light, no wet carpet (just had underneath the dash opened up installing hardwired bluetooth solution), no overheating, temperature doesnt even go over the halfway mark.

i am trying to pinpoint the problem before in turns into a much larger one.

what I am thinking its a small crack someplace in the Radiator but small enough you cant see it but only happens when the car is on.

what you might have to do is after driving the car for awhile let it sit and run and then look for a damp spot somplace around the radiator.

might be a very very very fine mist shooting out but then hits the engine and evaporats and that is the reason your not getting any drips.

A temp reading that high it may just be the ambient sensor under the front bumper I beleive going bad, unless it truly is that hot where you live. Just out of curiousity check the tranny fluid and see what kinda color/smell it has. I'm not sure if it's possible for the coolant to mix with the trans fluid via the radiator but logic tells me it just might be possible.

getting ready to leave my sister-in-laws this morning and I noticed small trail of coolant that seemed to come from my car. popped the hood and looked all around at the hoses and couldnt see any liquid anywhere. stopped halfway on the way back from sacramento checked the radiator and all of the hoses and they all looked good.

the only thing i can think of is that the lowest the coolant has ever gotten is to the bottom of the overflow tank, and that is only after the car has cooled off. so i am going to try replacing the hoses to the overflow tank and see what effect that has.

finally able to witness a leak of coolant from the 1 inch hose at the bottom of the overflow tank. i went into the garage after letting the car sit for a couple of hours and there were two seperate puddles on the floor. one of plain water from the evaporator which came from in front of the tire, another of coolant from behind the tire. lifted up the overflow tank and the fender wall was wet underneath and bottom of the hose was wet as well. looks like a simple hose replacement and i should be set.

the tank neck may be cracked where the hose fits on. common problem there. ckeck it carefully with the hose removed.
