My 2.5T based XC70 is MUCH faster feeling than the 2.4T I previously had, it has a nice exhaust tone (especially if you start in third gear with Winter mode), and it is fun to drive. So I am an asshole and use at least 1/2 throttle at every stoplight. Often times, this results in some seriously hardcore street racing to speeds as high as 40, 50, and sometimes even 60 miles per hour. The stakes are higher than ever, as if I lose I may end up stuck behind the other driver, as drivers sometimes change lanes and drive slowly in front of you. If I win, I can actually do the speed limit, or (if I'm feeling truly daring) 5 miles over, until I hit the next stoplight or patch of traffic. These are those stories.

Please note that I immediately let off the throttle if I feel the other car is trying to race me back, as street racing is dangerous and illegal and I do not wish to put anyone else's life in any danger.

1/7/2013 - Totally smoked a Ford Fusion SE. I was at least three car lengths ahead by the time we reached 45 miles per hour, where the lanes merged.

Honda Civic (4Th Generation)

https://volvospeed.com/index.php?app=forums&module=forums&controller=topic&id=160520

This morning, I was sitting at a stoplight about 100 yards from a zipper merge when an '87-91 Honda Civic sedan pulls up next to me. It's beat up, clearly unmodified, and sounds like it's going to die at any moment. The driver begins inching forward constantly anticipating the light changing.

Now, normally, I don't race other vehicles to zipper merge's, however on this day I know there to be a set of big metal plates over some sort of hole in the road. The plates don't completely cover the damaged section of the road, so there is a dip before them which forces those not in a Volvo XC to slow to a snail's pace before crossing. Immediately following these plates is a 90° curve, followed by a stretch of 20 feet riddled with potholes. If you're clear of other traffic, you can safely go around all of these potholes without anyone trying to pass you on the right. If there are other cars right behind you, they will probably be assholes and try to pass you as you try to move back into the lane.

So the light turns green and I swiftly depress the throttle to about 70%. This is when the unexpected happens, he floors it and you hear the engine struggling to try to produce an epic 92 horsepower!!! "HA!," I think to myself, "NICE TRY, FATTY!" But nothing in my life before this moment could have prepared me for what was going to happen next, for as I began to pull away the other driver suddenly made his move...

"Honk honk!" his car shouted in rage as his efforts to cut me off (which in fact were a complete failure because he couldn't even get his car from one lane to the other in the time it took my car to move 30 feet) were ruined. I immediately felt a sense of panic. I did not realize that he would honk at me! "What am I going to do now?" I think to myself as he honks again, now a good 40 feet behind me. And so I did the only thing you can do in this situation. I turned up my stereo and watched his car disappear into the distance in my rear view mirror.

On the way home from work on thursday I came upon a C6 vette in traffic. Guy looked like a total douche so I decided to bait him in . He decided to do a "check me out" move and slalomed between a few cars to prove his vette was a vette and not an oldsmobile. Once traffic broke and allowed me to I caught up to him and tapped the gas a few times, heard him drop a gear and I followed suit. He had a slight jump but I caught him and pulled past him slowly. We did this two times and when I rolled my window down and gave him a thumbs up he wouldn't even look at me. Go volvo!!

And then on the way TO work on friday morning I was minding my own business in the slow lane and saw a mustang bumper a few cars back. I slowed a bit to let him catch up and popped it in 3rd. This older dude didn't seem remotely interested. I went back into 5th and just as I did he took off so I had to chase him down. I had to move over a lane to pass him out. Pretty solid 55-135mph pull. This guy wouldn't look at me either when I gave him a thumbs up

Both of these cars put down between 375-395whp in stock form. I didn't do too bad for ~16psi and I was surprised my pressure plate held up. Once I get a clutch and pressure plate that can hold the power I'd like to run 22-23psi with meth and I should be able to have some fun with more modded v8s. I wouldn't have a chance if either of those cars had an intake/exhaust/tune/ etc..

Anyways long story short my S70 will demolish him in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. Those Jettas are very poor in the torque division. 40 to I forget he stayed with me to maybe 75 then fell back increasingly, 60 to 100ish same story. Cant wait to get my 18t and ARD blue tune done.
I was at an Auto X event today that a friend runs. On the way up I was running a little late and movin along pretty good when I noticed a 335I on my ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD as I slowed down to about 60mph. He backs off a little and all of a sudden he's right on me again and then tries to pass me. With that, Im in 3rd at 4000rpm and ready! Just as he gets a half car lenght on me, I hammer it! By the time I hit 120mph he was bus lenghts behind! He tried 4 times to pull me, and every time I walked him. The guy never looked over at me once lol.

I didnt run the Volvo at the Auto X as I have a smoked Dela link - bad tie rod - and my HG was off by 2hg?. Anyways, we had some fun in my friends wifes tuned 335i(that she raced also ) His car is a heavily modded SMG E46 M3 but that had rubbing issues and also didnt run.

On the way home I said to him lets do a few pulls as I want to see where my car is being its only at 13-14psi at the moment as Im still using a stock PCV - plus although the tune is safe, its not that aggressive. Sort of a baseline pull test? The M has big cams- headers - no cats -intake- exhaust- "4.10" diff (makes a huge difference I might add) - BBK- Rims - Coilovers ect ect. Its got around 380hp.

So we went for it a few times. The first time I was behind him and basically stayed with him from 60 -130mph. Second he got the jump and pulled a me a lenght. 3rd time I got the jump by a half a lenght and held 2 lenghts till 130mph. So, really it was about even. Oh, and my turbo hose blew right off at 130mph at the last run. That was the reason why my HG was off and felt as if the car was slower than usual on the way up. So I fixed that, and an on the way home she felt strong again plus my HG was back to 21.

Anyways, Im pretty happy that my car at only 13-14psi with a bad seal on the turbo to intercooler hose, and not really dialed in at all, was pretty even with an SMG M3 modded to the breast.

20psi+ - WMI - and tuned - should really make all the difference over the next while as I would say I have another 80HP in the car at least!. Heres a pic of the M3 last year before the BBK at Mosport DDT track (Rain did stop) Amazing car!

Edit.. Another friend of ours has an HPF 600+whp M3 on a stock motor although he wasnt there today. I have to say that seems the E46 M3s are now getting down around 16K-18K give or take -with a Turbo kit or SC kit these cars tick all the boxes for me and they have rear seats for the kids with a big trunk. hmm? lol

The new ones are absolutely awesome btw. Obviously modding his car would be quite cheap and easy and yield nice results but he was 100% stock as far as I know. Anyway pull from 50 I put 5+ cars on him and pull from 30 he got the jump and then I pulled 5+ cars...

He was passing me on my right . I was in 4th going around 75 mph . We want for it he passed me half a car and then when my 22 psi kicked in .

I was surprised how quick I lost him , went for 5th . Never done such a high speed after build .

I let off at one hundred 4 five miles per hour. Car is running great right now.

And s5 driver face when passing by , priceless . That's why I love my brick

He must of noticed my euro plate or 3 pillar gauges because he slowed down next to me and kinda juiced it. Thata when i saw the 550i badge. So we slowed down to about 50 and pulled on the 3rd honk. I jump about a car lenth then twards 85-100 he started to pull hard. after 100 I pretty much gave up. We did this about 4 time and the same out come every time. He ened up rolling down his window and gave me the thumbs up then threw his hazards on and took off. Oh ya, it sounded good by the way.

vs: new 2 door gti w/ intake at least, i think he said mbc and chip as well - i walked him, started at about 50, he got a quick jump of a half a car then it was all over... he was also the only one kinda questionable of my car so he deserved it lol

vs: 02 wrx sedan full stage 2, cobb access port, 3" exhaust intake coilovers etc. etc. (stock turbo/injectors/5speed) - didnt get the "fairest" race but he is certainly faster... 50 to 70 he consistently gained then i started to catch him but shut down due to the gti getting in the way lol and we all agreed on not driving too fast and being careful. probably around 100mph i would have gotten him but like i said poorly orchestrated and never got another chance...

now i'm a little skeptical of this video: (or maybe stage 2 is defined differently or this wrx wag wasnt running to potential)

vs: 98 a4 avant 1.8t - GOT KILLED lol 350+whp awd wagon, this car is sick... external wastegate(awesome btw) etc. etc. i forget what turbo he said he has (20g i believe?), i will update with that later, basically this car made all of us look like we were standing still haha. we went from about 40 to 80 and he had about 4 car lengths on me lol, probably a great match up with Hussein s XR

fun time though, got some good compliments but really realized i gotta get the 18t in and a 5 speed STAT.

great run too on the "13 curves" in syracuse/onandago ny - beautiful scenery and awesome curves for 50-60mph driving, the wrx owned here of course but i was proud of all my new suspension mods the 25/25mm f/r sways finally got put to use!

So i'm heading south on the highway, cruising at 83mph, I see HIDs coming up behind me kinda briskly. He gets beside me, makes a little move to the slower lanes and punches it.

I sit back just to see how hard his pull is, i'm a little impressed. So I give chase to about 115 and shadow him for at least 5 minutes speeding up and slowing down through midnight traffic.

I get beside him around 80, he downshifts (5mt) and goes, so I bury the throttle. We're neck and neck to 140mph, I ease off then he gets on his brakes. A little later down the road i'm in the far left lane then he gets on my ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD, I give him three hazards then bury it again, I can't pull away, he can't pass, it's like we're anchored together, ~150mph I ease off, he passes and flashes his rear foglight. I head back to my home in Florida to research, thinking it's an A6 w/ a supercharger (he had pillar gauges, and S4 emblem which I thought he put on)...

About a week later i'm at the junkyard, I come out to throw a part on before going back inside, I see the same (A6), I do the walkaround to confirm. I'm determined to talk to the owner, can't find him so w/e.

30 minutes later i'm walking out and it's him pulling out of his spot, I give him the "one second" finger, he backs up, remembers me, pops his hood. The motor is no 2.8 V6 s/c, it's a factory INLINE 5 TURBO!! I'm speechless but he says it's on stock boost, 227hp stock, Quattro, 5 speed, intake, exhaust, and some other stuff.

We decide to go again b/c he was surprised he couldn't pass the T5, so we went from 40, I honk three times, he puts it in 2nd, floors it. we're even to about 60 then I walk by half a car by 80, 90 then 100 i'm a car ahead. Slow down to 40 he says his car's too heavy and he wants to up the boost later. I give a thumbs up and pat my Volvito on the dash...

I thought he'd have me down low (quattro), and i'd pull up top (front wheel drive). Turned out to be vice versa but no pullage up top by either.

All runs were done in Mexico.

But recently I had a good friend of mine who I've been trying to entice to give me a run, finally cave. He always had an excuse... new clutch, low on gas, always some BS, but this past weekend, we went out and had some fun...

With the cooler temps my car has been an absolute monster, but the downside is traction is noticeably much worse (very much on my winter to do list is a gripper or quaife)...

So goes with out saying that the only pull we did from a dead stop was all in his favor as he moved forward and I stayed in one place for the most part...

We finally got in some nice second gear pulls (40mph) territory, and again traction was a problem, but once I got traction, it was no contest. we would be dead even, I even let him get the jump, just because I didn't want any excuses, and do to loss of traction , I would be a 1/2 car length behind, but by the top of 2nd I would be at his front fender already, and third was a very comfortable stroll, with my car pulling on him no questions asked. We would have shut these all down in 110 - 125mph range.

The one pull we did in third gear, starting roughly at 60mph and up to the end of third which form me is ~110mph, was no contest. I again let him jump it, and this time though I got to front of his front doors, and once I laid into it, I just walked away again....

We rendezvoused later at my house we had other friends with us, I finally brought it up since he hadn't mentioned anything, and by his own admission, "once the turbo spooled, and you managed to keep traction, there was no catching you"

His is dealer maintained and I have driven it myself it is in great condition, and it is a manual, his is also completely stock, no performance work done to it. He can appreciate cars, but by no means is he the kind of guy that would work on a car himself...

So for me I felt on top of the world and wanted to challenge a coworker of mine who has a 2011 Mustang GT. We have always talked trash just for fun, and hes driven mine, and I've driven his, and I honestly would have thought the BMW to be the bigger challenge of the two....

On paper:

2003 M5

394BHP

4,026lbs

2011 Mustang GT

402BHP (regular grade gasoline, and thats all this guy puts in it).

3,533lbs

so right off the bat the you can see the BMW is 500 lbs heavier, with HP being a marginal difference. I think it might come down to gear ratios...

When I drove both cars, the M5 had seemed more impressive to me, but thats just because its an M5 and that played more into it, but of the two I remember the M5 being the one that left me with a better impression.

GT owner finally told me, he's over $50K into his car, and its the newer, bigger, badder, V8 and if I went up against him and lost, oh well its just a 15 year old, Volvo sedan. If I win, well how would that make him feel, he's impression is I have nothing to lose, and he's got nothing to gain.

He says win or lose, i cant say hey my car pulls on a 16year old Volvo, what would be the point of that...

I'll see if I can get him to bite, as I think that would be a fun race...

That's really the only good thing I can say about my first ever trip to the track. I was hoping to get into the 13's, and after my first run I thought I could get there.

My first pass I bogged slightly coming off the line, and felt like I was driving way to conservative. But it was my first track experience, so I was trying to get a feel for it. Funny thing is, that turned out to be my best run of the night...14.350@104mph

When I tried to get more aggressive that's when I started having problems. My next pass I thought I actually did break something. I dumped the clutch at the line at about 3k rpm, floored it, and the car just sat there I thought for a second I had blown up the clutch, but I was just smoking the tires. The next pass I babied it off the line, figuring I could make up time in 2nd and 3rd. When I shifted to 2nd I again smoked the tires.

That's how the rest of the night went, never could get the car to hook up. I had put my original 16" Perfos back on for the track, because I didn't want to burn off my good 17" tires. I'm guessing 205/55/16 Michelin MXV's probably aren't ideal for track use

I can get a good deal on a set of 16x6.5 steel wheels. I have access to many used tires. What would be the fattest tire I could squeeze on these rims for track use? Am I still going to be disappointed? Should I just bite the bullet and get a LSD?
