Hastings Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Ok so here's the basic breakdown...My options are taking my current 2000 C70 LPT Automatic (70k miles just for the note) and tricking it out with an 18T (or is it 18G? So confused) brand-new mitsu turbo, exhaust, intake, downpipe, and ECU... Or get a 1998 C70 HPT Automatic with 145k miles on it and brand new tires (a week old) and have to save up for modifications later on. My current one has 190HP, the HPT has 234, that's not a bad difference right off the bat... 43HP never hurt anyone, that's for sure Anyway, my main question is would putting a 18T (or is it 18G, gah I hate telephones, you can never tell what letter is what...) in a LPT car (thus being the engine designed for it) be really bad/too much strain on the engine? IPD seems to think so, although them being a big company they may have just been covering their asses. Thanks for any responses.
Hastings Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 I know it's a 2.4L, according to carfax.
Hastings Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 Is it 18T? It's whatever turbo is called 18T or 18G... I couldn't understand him over the phone, and thought it was 18T till a friend of mine tried to correct me with 18G, then I just got confused.Basically here... I want to put an 18T on what is currently a stock LPT C70, year 2000, 67k miles (not that the miles really matter that much). Some kind of pressure or boost limitations are set in that engine, am I incorrect? Or at least it's recommended that you don't put a turbo that big in there as it was designed for low pressure turbo. I also plan to do exhaust, downpipe, intake, and ECU if I were to do it on my current LPT volvo...
ErikS Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 For what you seem to want you need a custom tune and some internals, or limit it.
MeanGreenSwedeMachine Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 If you actually have that $5000 budget you were talking about in another thread, then get the IPD kit and then get some upgraded rods for your LPT. Its not like you're going to crack a cylinder or anything. You should be good to go and it'll be faster than if you just buy the HPT. Plus, custom is more fun.Note: If by some change you do crack a cylinder or something, please don't come hunt me down.
FastWagon95 Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Its an HPT, damnit. I really think the wheels were switched if its an LPT, oh well you'll find out when you have the turbo off.
s70turbo1998 Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Have you made up your mind on getting an HPT or sticking with the LPT yet? You should probably stop putting up these "what if" threads and do a bit more reading on the differences between upgrading the LPT engine and the HPT engine. If you keep the LPT, a 15G/16T with exhaust/DP/intake/ECU will be more then enough turbo for your goals. That way you can fully benefit the turbos full range of efficiency, as opposed to keeping a bigger turbo tuned down so you don't damage your engine. The turbos I mentioned can also be upgraded, using bigger trim wheels or a port/polish for more flow.
Fudge_Brownie Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Theres two types of mitsubishi compressor wheels. An 18G and an 18T. The 18T is far less popular from what I've seen, so your friend is probably a little uninformed and assuming you were referring to the 18G. Don't anyone take my word for it, but I believe the 18G flows a LOT more than an 18T.

FastWagon95 Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Addressing that.Reading FTL, I was looking at original post my bad.
Auburn T5 Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 play it safe with a 16t, S60R manifold, exhaust, intercooler and a good tune and enjoy what is probably the most power the LPT's engine is capable of dealing with.
