White/non-hispanic

Not really a political question, but whenever I fill out a form, the option I select is "White/Non-Hispanic."

I understand the white part.. but why add the non-Hispanic part? Isn't that kind of a given?

What forms are you referring to?

It is more for census/demographics and how the EEOC wants to classify data, if you are talking about a government form or employment application.

Social categorization, or how society classifies people based on race (their skin color) is different then how someone would classify themsleves ethnicity wise. If someone has one white parent (lets say the father to keep the last name patriarchal), and one hispanic parent (the mother) a person could check either White/Non-Hispanic or White/Hispanic, depending on how they would want to classify themselves on a form.

How would you classify Tiger Wood's race, African-american, right? But if he was filling out an employement application (not that he would ever need to) he could put Asian, and would be able to justify it.

Haven't you ever met someone from South America who is white? I had a professor who could have been British for all I knew and then he introduced himself and had a very thick Uruguayan accent. His skin color is white but he's hispanic.

And some Spanish people are just as white as French people, I don't know why the hispanic part matters and not the French part but whatever.
