wheelsup Posted October 12, 2008 Author Report Share Posted October 12, 2008 pics and I think I am right its really easy to get the plastic cover underthere and if you tighten it down it can be so little you wont notice itMan that is right on the mark, I did a search and found his thread and this picture:That is what mine looks like. So what is the problem? I can't quite follow how he fixed it. It sounds like he just tighened the bolt to the tensioner pulley but mine is as tight as can be without me snapping the bolt head off. I don't know on Volvo's, but usually there is a large spacer/retainer that goes between the timing belt, then the cover goes on, then the crank pulley. This spacer keeps the timing belt in line, if it is missing, the belt will walk. Most of the Japanese cars I have worked on use this spacer thing, it is usually 2" diameter and 1/16" thick. Just throwing out an idea.No I didn't take the crank pulley off, I followed the VS Bay 13 directions to the "T" until it got time to replace the pulleys/belts and I used an MVS writeup to do those. Ozark Lee Posted October 12, 2008 Report Share Posted October 12, 2008 There has been a bad batch of INA tensioner rollers for over a year now. Replace the roller itself on the old casting and everything will be fine. I HAD the exct same thing happen to me......my belt was off the pullys after i did the job and it drove me crazy i thought i did something wrongi had received 2 bad pullys from fcp! i put back the new belt with my old pullys and presto everything was fine!!!!i checked the "new " pullys after i took them back out and sure enough the pully mounting bracket had a tiny warp which caused the problem!! so much for OE parts the pullys were INA Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I feel better now, it doesn't fix my car but I will do what Ozark has suggested.Sorry for posting on so many different forums, I have this posted over half the Volvo forums I think!! wheelsup Posted October 15, 2008 Author Report Share Posted October 15, 2008 Just an update, I had to it towed to a local indy mechanic this morning, I gave up. I've been fussing with this thing now for 4 days, it just needs to come to an end. I told him about the tensioner pulley issue, he's probably going to just order another part, as long as it keeps the belt centered I could care less where it comes from.To top it off I had snapped off the top bolt holding the serpentine tensioner on, and when undoing the tensioner pulley I can now only get it half way out before it starts binding on something. No idea what...oh well. Grrr. Hey I proved to myself I could do it, when I had it together it ran well, but I just couldn't deal with it anymore. wheelsup Posted October 17, 2008 Author Report Share Posted October 17, 2008 One more update, my Indy guy replaced both pulleys and put a new belt on and it runs fine. He said the problem was the tensioner pulley most likely but replaced both pulleys for the hell of it. He put a new belt on because the "new" old one had been rubbing and was slightly frayed. Anyway just a heads up, DON'T BUY THE PULLEYS FROM FCP. They are bad. If anything just replace the roller on the tensioner pulley, if I had done that I think I would've saved myself a day of trouble and a couple hundred buck$. Then I bought another set for my V70 acouple of months ago, and the tensioner pully I got from the same place was bad - the casting wouldn't move/play as designed after tightening it into the block, but I read about some issues with it before (probably Lee's or one of the regulars here), so I just re-used the casting by moving the bearing itself from the new-one and didn't make any fuss about it. I feel bad for those who discovered the problem after the fact, considering the hassle of removing it, and doing it all over again. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
