2005 Volvo S40 T5----worthless!

My friend got a Volvo precertified 2005 Volvo S40 T5 AWD. The car is very nice. Confy, good looking, and even hangs right next to my Volvo 240 while racing.

The problem is it's completely unreliable. Every other week, its at the dealer getting something else fixed. It all started out with the driveshaft needing replaced. Then motor mounts went bad. They were also replaced.

Then, just the other night, we were accelerating on the highway (had the car at full throttle, nothing crazy) and the car just shut off and all the dash lights came on. Upon pulling over, the car sounded like it had no compression and would not start. There was oil all over the motor.

We call Volvo on guard, they arrange a tow to the dealer. We then find out a few days later that the motor is blown.

Aside from all of this, the dealership is ran by smartasses, we go in and he's like "MUSTA been driving it hard eh?"

UHH wtf.

Can anyone else chime in on the late model S40s. This thing is a total POS. And it's only got like 30k on it or something. omgwtf

I personally do not care for them as they are riding on the coatails of the real Volvo's awesome reputation.

As for the smartass in service. This is a problem as well in many dealerships. With that being said, would you purchase another one(new model), probably not and this is what I'm finding as an indy. Honestly though from what Volvo say's they reconize this and are working on a remedy??

Just my thought's

;)

Car at full throttle = nothing crazy. I'd agree, but I would also agree that WOT is "Hard." Not sure that quantifies "smartass" so much as it means he was right and you weren't happy LOL.

How old is your friend? Guessing you guys are younger (the "WTF " etc in your post). Two guys under twenty-five walk into a dealer to talk about a Volvo with a blown motor and I'm thinking that the guys in service switch to "Numbnuts mode." Looking at most of the volvos around Seacoast NH etc that are driven by non-parents, you see quite a few handed over to High School kids by parents and consequently, a ton of FLOGGED Volvos. Sad but true.

So I am not saying you or your friend are numbnuts, but lets step back...the car has been in repeatedly for things synonymous with abuse...Driveshaft, motor mounts etc. If we were to get the other side of the story, not yours, I bet they'd have the file flagged as abused. Are they right? Maybe. Maybe the car is a lemon. The deciding factor here would be to see the history of the car from BEFORE your friend bought it and see how reliable the car was before it was "hanging with your 240." :D

Good luck.

He's only had the car three months or so. It had the drive shaft failure a week after he bought it.

As for flogging it, no. He takes damn good care of his car. He saved up 20k of his hard earned money for years now to buy a car in full. Yeah, we are only 19, but this is not a hand me down car. This is something that is not just monkeyed around with and toyed. It is his pride and joy.

It was a Volvo pre certified car bought from a volvo dealership.

I can see where the service guys are coming from, with us being young and all, but he just handed over 20k in cash to them. They wont even give him a loner car because he is not 21, despite them giving him one earlyer times. It's like they are getting fed up with him always needing service to their POS car they sold to him.

He has been walking to work for the past week while the dealer "inspects" the engine. omgwtf

its not the dealers fault that its taking so long volvo requires the engine to be taken apart and spec'ed out before they send you an engine, i would know because ive done it 4 times already and 2 of the times volvo had me rebuild the engine not replace it because the damage was not enough to condemn the engine

I agree. This does happen. Your boy should have an extended Warranty or CPO Self Authorize with the purchase of the car. This means the factory warranty is extended for another full term. Yes it's an inconvenience not having the car, but Volvo and the dealer should be able to take care of it.

The S40's have had some issues. Breather System failures, Rear suspension camber issues until recently. These things happen. Each motor might be built on the same day but the parts and castings are still individual. Parts can fail. I Have done a R motor after only 350 miles on it, due to bad Bearing in #4. A new XC90 3.2 6 cylinder cause of failed lifters. XC90 trans with 47 miles on it. These things happen. Sorry it happened to your friend. Volvo will probably come through, if what you say happened on the road did. Don't worry.

It sucks if the Service Advisor is being an a$$ about things.

Best of luck and let us know the outcome
