Mini Project: Mirror Cover Gauge Pod

I am going to make that... its sorta like a gauge pod that I custom made out of ABS from my RC car drifting days that fit my gauge perfectly, so I'm gonna have to pick some up and then get to work in my dorm room, this is gonna be sweet.

Also, take your time prepping the surface before painting it, the smallest scratch will show up with paint on top of it.

Yeah, there's a couple of low spots still but mostly around the bottom side. I may try another light coat on top, not sure. I may also be using a kind of a texture paint so that will help cover some of the little flaws.

Thanks for all the comments. Hopefully I will be getting out there tonight again.

Bad news first. Couldn't find my Dremel. Should have stopped there, but I hacked away anyways with various tools, files, and drills and didn't like where it was going, so I think I'm going to start with 2nd prototype.

Good news. I have a better game plan as I make the next one and I'll fix some of the little cosmetic things that were bothering me. I know before I glue where I need to cut out on the mirror cap to get the guage as deep as I can. I know I can get it pretty far recessed and it will look something more like this (excuse the bad photoshop).

So hopefully this weekend I'll post back with results.

you know you could use this same idea for a four pod for the apillar :o

Or a six pack. LOL. This is the basic idea I think I might try when I do a xenon projector retrofit.

Well, my strut mounts and tie rods didn't get here for this weekend so I guess this is what I'll be working on (presuming I can find my extra mirror cover). As far as making it for others, well, probably not right now. Not that I couldn't use the extra money, but time is the limiting factor. We'll see how the second one goes first.

Dude I think that looks great the way it is!! Nice job, that is what I wanted to do but don't have the fab skills or time hah.

Can't wait to see the final product!

OK. Could NOT find the extra mirror cover to save my life. So I took the original and made it work. I noticed last night that the epoxy was separating a bit from the mirror cover when I put a lot of stress on it, so that tells me I didn't prep it right. It seemed to bond really well with the abs pipe. I was able to basically peel it apart and sand and start again. I made sure to do a better job scuffing and took a tiny drill bit and drilled several holes through so that it would be sure to anchor in. Still can't find my dremel  but I borrowed a small air die tool with a small tapered grinder bit and that worked out really nice. It's just about exactly right. I don't see this getting any better, so you can only say nice things from here forward. I still have some final sanding and paint, but I'm really happy with the result.

I tapered the edge a little more here to match a little better with the ring.

There you go.

I'm still loving it. Can it go any shorter or is that the max?

Maybe a little, not too much more at that angle. If I was OK with changing the angle a bit on it (i.e. start over again) so that it isn't pointing directly at me, then it could probably be recessed a bit. But I like the angle. I'm not sure if I'm willing to mess with it too much more. Maybe though...
