farang
I'm comparing a 98 V70 T5 versus a 99 V70 XC AWD...and am curious as to which wagon you would choose and why.I'm 95% decided...but wanted to get that extra 5% from the experts. Both parties are asking in the neighborhood of $8,000....but NADA pricing shows them both between $6k - $7k.Both cars are around 80k miles...and both look very clean.Factor in any '98 vs '99 model differences...plus different drive trains...and different turbos...and model-specific maintenance......which wagon comes out on top? Account_Deleted_T5M
Hands down the 98 t5, its a real volvo not Ford, and you won't have to deal with ETM issues, and the t5 is alot faster, has more potential, and you don't have to worry about the AWD system which sucks :)
early_november
How about neither? T5 if you must. These cars are 10 years old, albeit with low milage but I don't think they are worth $8,000. More like $5000-6000, especially since they are stock. Both look nice, looks like the XC's bumper is fading bad. Didn't catch where you live, maybe the awd would be beneficial if it didn't break. Oh and the trailer hitch, could have done alot of towing. farang
I completely agree with the $5k-$6k bid for both. Good point about towing by the XC, too.The XC has spent many years up here in NE Wisconsin...lots of salt in the colder months. Not sure yet about the T5, yet. I'm test driving it tomorrow. My wife and I are looking for second car...and these two wagons both recently came into our sights. It doesn't have to be a wagon, but I'd love nothing more than to have another Volvo to pair with my S70 T5. She's leaning more towards something japanese...but staying under $6k (for something that doesn't have uber miles on it) looks extremely challenging. I'd rather put the money into an older, lower mileage Volvo than say, a slightly newer mazda/honda/toyota but with like, 150k on it.I'm biased, for sure

I’ve never been model year ‘status’ type conscious. I’ve been of the opinion that if you have good rolling iron, stick with it. At 280,000 miles I invested around 15K in my ’98 and for a third the price of a new one, I have something that’s better than anything Volvo is putting on the street today, IMHO. I do agree, 98 T5 hands down for all the other reasons.
BEJinFBK
Have you considered a '98 R? It's a nice combination of both. Quick like a T-5 (a little heavier and lower) , but it offers AWD.If you spend much time on ice and snow, it's worth a test drive. And if you aren't in a hurry, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one in this price range. Just get maintenance records! The AWD is a very basic, mechanical system. You won't have any electronics issues.Maintain it sensibly and don't beat up on it, and it's a very stable drivetrain.I think many of the owners that don't like this AWD forget that these are not built as all out performance cars. Treat it right and the system will work well for years.I really enjoy the night and day difference that having AWD on ice makes.'98 models, with an older fuel system, also avoids the ETM problems from later years .I kinda like the simplicity of a cable between my right foot and the intake system. The R also has a tighter suspension and a nicer interior. Take a drive!

It handles better than FWD.Look for a R, as suggested - get the power & the more sophisticated suspension combined.
Joey P.
I'd go with the 98 because, no etm issue, and it's a t5. For the record, I think that the AWD is great! I drove without a drive shaft for 2-3 months because the front cv joint had gotten bad on the drive shaft and I hated driving the car! I recently bought a reman drive shaft and the car feels better now. It's go that "planted feeling" again.

My '00R is as much Ford as his car and thats 0%! What a dope.If you want AWD and T-5 get an R, '98 are easier to tune due to the ECU, but don't worry about +99 cars with ETM they are covered under Volvo warranty till 200k miles.
