lookforjoe
RIIIIIIGHT Watch thisHereyeah, I've seen that - doesn't prove anything at all - some dweeb how can't drive a Volvo - and it's irrelevant to how well the system holds up under load. JehovArob
RIIIIIIGHT Watch thisHereHmm. What about this YouTube video? And what's the consensus on AWD reliability anyway? Been hearing too much difference of opinion...

Been hearing too much difference of opinion...See the grate lay down? my FWD volvo could do that, not dirt/sand/snow which is where an AWD shines
farang
I've actually been finding lots of 1998-2000 AWD's in the area (up to 150 miles away)....and in the $5k's-$6k'sI'm going nuts here...the more I look at these AWD's, the more I like them. The wife now wants one coz we had our first snow/ice last night.I will take care of the car...prolly only go all synthetic and mod the exhaust...and not drive it like its stolen...but am still worried about the possibility of bigtime maintenance costs. snookwhaler
There is no Volvo in this video. But this does better explain what is happening and shows a few examples. This does explain (to some extent) why the "Volvo" in the video above could not climb the hill. It looks like the Honda and Toyota are suffering from the same problem as the Volvo.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t09ExAUgtyE...feature=relatedThere are still lots of other things to consider from the age of the car, to the condition and type of tires and how the car is loaded. VOLVOPHILE
I have had two 1998 V70's. A T5 and my current R. I loved my T5, but one day I was making a right turn from a double right lane. I misjudged what the lane the oncoming truck was in. As soon as I pulled out I realized I just cut someone off. I stepped on the gas to pull away from the driver as fast as I could. My turbo kicked in and my right front tire spun so fast I created a cloud of smoke, and needless to say I didn't go very far. After that experience I was really set on finding my R. I have had it for a couple of years and LOVE it! I can pull out from my garage full throttle and take off like I am on rails. I love the AWD. It makes the car so much fun to drive and my wife loves that no matter how she drives, how fast she accelerates the car just goes. No steering pull, no nothing. Most of my driving is done in Los Angeles on dry pavement. I have only had the car in snow and ice once and it felt great. If it is really only between the two I would get the T5. You are already on these forums and chances are you are going to stay here and find out tons of stuff about these cars and get a little addicted to mods and repairs. The T5 or R engines have so much power. I would go for the power over the AWD if I had to make a choice. I personally would keep searching and go for both.Don't settle on one that costs too much. There are too many out there. I would watch all the classifieds on IPD and all these forums and pick one that has been truly taken care of. farang
ok...so...i'm buggin' now.i've expanded my search outwards up to 200 miles (i'm about 30 min south of green bay, wi).inlcudes chicago, milwaukee, minneapolis...you get the idea.just found a black 2000 V70 R AWD with 153.5K miles for $6,995.looks dope...but sure seems high dollar, tho. it already has dual exhaust...but i'm not sure if it's aftermarket or not. don't think it is. can be found at the boucher VW dealership in franklin, wi.like i said before...wife is now uber keen on AWD volvo for the winters here.... oh darn... magicaljake
i would choose the t5by the time the roads are bad enough that you absolutely need that AWD, you wouldn't be driving anyway. im trying to say....these FWD volvos deffinatly hold there own in the snow, the only time i havn't been able to drive it on the road was when all the roads were closed, one storm a few years back. Stormtrooper1
by the time the roads are bad enough that you absolutely need that AWD, you wouldn't be driving anyway. The roads don't need to be awful for the AWD to make a real and noticible difference.Last winter it was snowing and icy, I took the Saff out to the post office, and i didn't have the slightest trouble. About a half hour after that we took the wife's v70(N/A) out of town, and were sliding all over, losing traction on starts, and even a bit of fishtailing on the freeway. I've never had issues like that with my AWD.
farang
We drive all year 'round up here in NE Wisconsin...even in the crappiest of weather.Parking brakes in parking lots go spin spin spin. Too fun....and Stormtrooper, your comments are really what we're looking for in our next car.Not so much the speed of the T5...but the extra bump from the AWD.I'm not going to jam on this next car car like I did in the early days of my T5.In fact, the wife will prolly end up driving the AWD, anyway. We're really looking for something more safe than fast.I guess this thread...or perhaps a new thread...should address any major year differences between V70 XC's before Ford took over...and which is better/best between 1997 and 2000 (assuming '01 transitioned to Ford).Hey - does IPD/TME still make a dual exhaust for the V70 XC??I don't see it on their website anymore <_<

JehovArob
While this thread is going on and has attention:If the ETM has been replaced in a '99, what are the odds it'll die again soon/at all? I think I remembered reading something about how they didn't fix them right the first time or fixed the programing or something. If the ETM was done before/after this, will that make a big difference? And anyone know when that was?
