jo346820
Just wanted to see which everyone would choose. Here's my breakdown of my reading the reports on tirerack and elsewhere on the strengths and weaknesses of each.Pirelli's Pro: Best ride quality, increased steering response, amazing wet and dry traction, low noise, 35-40k treadwear. Offered in 205/50/16Cons: Reported good snow traction but questionable winter abilities due to tread pattern. Many cars report tramlining. With installation and road hazard, ~$500ContiExtremePro: Great handling, noise, and ride comfort. Reportedly great in winter. Almost as good as pirelli's in everything except probably not as good riding. ~$400 for everythingCons: Lots of reports of flat spotting, comes in 205/55/16 instead of 50 series, not as well put together as pirelli. Bfgoodrich traction t/a'sPro: Long, long treadwear, raving reviews about it's abilities, great warranty, reportedly great in winter and wet. Lots of great reviews about performance for a tire in this categoryCon: Stiff riding of the 3, ~$500 for everything, is high performance all-season so possibly sacrificing some performance ( or will an 850 turbo even need the performance of the pirelli or conti? ). Not as well made as pirelli ( put together in 2 pieces instead of quarters ) More road noise?Let me know which one you would pick for your next tire if you had only the three. Some people say that by going with all-seasons, you sacrifice. I feel that by going with all-seasons with today's tire technologies, I get the best of all worlds. Long treadwear, great handling, and decent winter performance in snow and slush. Thanks for your time guys! Looking forward to replies -Joe
JDELUNA
I have the BFG's in 225/50/16 and they are a very nice tire, mucho grip and very quiet.
bitjockey
Michelin Pilot Sport A+S are VERY good.
The Stig
I was going to suggest the Pilot Sport A+S as well, as I have heard good things about them.
jo346820
MichelinsPros: Great ride, great traction, michelin made quality, well reviewedCons: ~$700 for total package ( way above my desire ), low treadlife at about 18-25k per set, occasional problems with inside tread wearing quickly according to some people, available in 205/55 or 225/50 but no 205/50. Sorry guys, I'm not willing to pay 200-300 more for a tire that will wear out in half the time, and isn't available in the size I desire. Therefore, it's not a part of this poll. The tires I named are the ones I"ve researched thoroughly and compared to their competition, they shine. Price, treadlife, all season capabilities, and performance all seem to be excellent. -Joe
beachnut
I had a horrible experience with the ContiExtremeContacts from TireRack. You mentioned flatspotting ... yeah, like crazy. But the worst thing is they wouldn't balance worth a stuff. Finally TR gave me my money back and I got a set of Mich Pilot Sports.
jo346820
I just read like 40-50 reviews on the michelins....I don't get it. Some people were saying they got 14k out of em....a couple people were saying 35-40k and still going?I don't like the fact that most also report it as a heavier tire which lowered MPG, but I do like the design of the tire. Looks like it could handle some ice...the pirellis dont look like they can handle ice (: -Joe
beachnut
I have to agree ... Mich's are overpriced and over-rated, but they make one of the most round tires out there and that's what I was looking for in my situation. I have the Pilot summer tires, no ice here . Whatever you do, stay away from the Conti's. The guy at my tire shop really likes Kumho's for some reason. He says he never has problems with them on the balancer (Hunter Road Force) and they're dirt cheap.
Geevs
Suggest you add Falken Ziex-512s to the mix. TireRack doesn't carry them so there's not much online reviews on them but there are folks here in VS who recommend them. They are smooth, quiet tires but a tad soft during cornering. Consumer's Report rated them #1. Also check the reviews athttp://www.1010tires.com/tiresearch.asp?br...irebrand=Falken252 reviewers gave it a rating 4.2 out of 5. VAVolvo
Where do you live?If your living in a colder climate, subject to a lot of snow...you ought to get something with good winter tread (duh) if your driving it often. It all depends on your driving conditions, driving style, buget, and miles you put on your car every day.Peace and good luck!
grega311
What about Kumo Ecsta ASX tires? they are Z rated, all season M&S, and like all Kumo tires reasonably priced.
XtremePsionic
What about Kumo Ecsta ASX tires? they are Z rated, all season M&S, and like all Kumo tires reasonably priced.←I have them, and its snowing a bit in Calgary at the moment. They're pretty good, price is great (and I got a great deal locally) Grip in dry is pretty good, but not as good as real summer tires. Max G I recorded on the G meter is 0.82, and it will start squealing at around 0.77g or so. Ride isn't bad for the size either (215/45/17). Its quiet (hardly hear it over the wind noise and other noise). Its very good on wet too.It just snowed yesterday, about 2 inches or so, the snow traction is suprisingly good considering its a Z rated tire. I would say its just as good as my "normal" factory H rated 195/60/15 Toyo. Obviously its only about 60%-70% or so as good as decent snow tires. Are there better tires? probably, some of the ones listed above will perform better overall, but at the price I paid for them ($690 canadian mounted and balanced) I am very very pleased overall.
