Just sometimes I wish that i had a volvo to atleast add into some of the discussion. I havent really spent much time at all in the performance section and spend most of my time reading ot, rforum and fwd 99+ repairs. I still go to the volvo meets and really enjoy the cars in general. But i dont see the site going to shit, its a bit more social than before maybe, but we are still getting things done when it comes to modifying the cars and diy repairs. I have been on here for almost 4 full years now, and the general quality of new members has gone down substantially. There has undoubtedly been a proliferation of people coming on here, asking the question that's been asked a million times before, and everyone (myself included) gets impatient and tells them to search for their answer. Maybe that's a function of the search being somewhat difficult to use or maybe general laziness, but that is one trend I'm noticing. Additionally, Chuck was spot on in the increasing "I know better than you" attitude of many new members, but I guess there's nothing we as a community can do about that. Some of those members have since left the site (StarmanDXE comes to mind).Member relations don't seem as divided to me either, I tend to agree with what Tony said a couple of posts earlier. I only see the bickering come out when people start the lightning-rod moral dilemma thread (teen pregnancy, abortion, politics, whatever). And quite frankly, it's just dumb to do that and then get offended when other members say things you don't want to hear or that come off as callous. Otherwise most people seem friendly and willing to help.On the automotive side of things, I too would like to see a more prolific aftermarket for Volvo, especially in this country. I think the kind of community we'd all like to see is like the turbo performance club over in Sweden, but I guess it's pretty obvious why they have so much more going for them over there. It's pretty hard to be original on here these days, and when you suggest anything out of the "R Bumper, Pegs, and Tint" world you're usually trounced on pretty hard. That really does need to stop. Yes, 98% of us think that cheap chrome wheels will look dreadful on a Volvo, but we really need to adopt a more "your car, your mods" kind of attitude. In any case, I'm glad that VS exists in its current form. I like being able to plan meets with locals and using the forum is a super-efficient way of doing it. The traffic here way outpaces some "other" sites and in general, I think I have more in common with members here than on those other sites. And, given that I have limited personal technical knowledge about Volvos, I typically respond to these posts with a "I have no personal knowledge about this, but here is something related I've found" type answer. Other times, I've found related discussions on other forums that are also happening here and I add the links to highlight them to provide a wider view of perspectives on the current topic.It has never been my intention to post links from different sites out of disrespect for this site-- it was just my way of trying to contribute and give back because I do appreciate this site and its place in the wider Volvo community.Given that I don't have any technical knowledge to contribute, I mostly spend my time in the other sections (Announcements sections, cosmetic/detailing, for sale, OT, etc.) and I enjoy coming to this site as I enjoy the humor and general goodwill that I usually find here. While I have come across some responses that are rude, argumentative, etc., they are usually followed by others with more positive/helpful advice, so I usually find that everything balances itself out. And, since I am a newer member and haven't experienced the history of this community, all I can say is that while VS may be experiencing some growing pains from newer users with bad attitudes, I find that the main core of users/Volvo enthusiasts are a wonderful reflection of this community and its unique identity.Thanks for all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to provide this wonderful community/resource for us all!Take care,volvie! It's all over the internet, as people don't have to be held responsible for their attitudes or obnoxious comments. Many of these people would not have the gall to say these things to people face to face, but the "keyboard commando" surfaces all too often in this medium.I'm on many other forums for gaming, volvos, cars in general, and some political stuff, and it's prevalent everywhere. I applaud you for mentioning here, because it can poison the well from which we all draw our common interest, in this case our bricks. I'm a newly registered member, but I've been on VS in the past and as a guest more recently (I went over to the Ford side for a few years), and I think it's a fantastic resource and source of entertainment. But if people are afraid to ask questions or make new posts for fear of getting slammed by a particular group (and yes, they exist everywhere), then they simply won't post. Thus new topics and ideas cease to pop up, and we're left to rehash the same old stuff. Sometimes bringing up a new spin on an old topic is welcome, and shouldn't be met with the "did you use search yet?" response. All in all, I enjoy it here, as many other members do. And the issues noted aren't immune to VS, but we can at least nip them in the a$$ here if we try to keep this a fun place for ALL.I think I'm done.
