Possible Belt Jump On 850r

1996 850R

Recommended Posts

I have a 1996 Volvo 850R. Car was running fine, next morning, no start. Temperature outside was -5 degrees F. Cranked the motor forever. Finally discovered the distributor cap was fouled. Replaced that and tried starting. Cranked forever, but finally caught. While I was cranking the engine, it would sound like the motor would bind for a second and then continue turning. Needless to say, it runs, but sounds like it's out of time badly. Cylinder compression at 50 degrees was around 155psi. Is it possible the timing belt jumped time? Slacked on changing it and it has 100K miles on belt. Motor vibrates, shakes, and has weak power... almost stalls when put into gear.

is the 155 psi on all or just one ?

sure the belt jumped ?

and CEL ?

if the belt jumped there would be a assload of tapping and such .

last time you did a full tune up ?

again any cels and go from there.

might be a loose vaccum lline , I pulled the vac cap on my car on the tree and it sounded like ass due to unmetered air .

155 to 165 psi in each cylinder. CEL is on, but can't check codes. No reader and don't want to drive if timing is off. Car needs a tune up. Changed cap, plugs, and plug wires... but not the rotor. Or is it possible that jumping the vehicle from a Chevy pickup could damage something electrical? No tapping sounds, the motor just sways back and forth and has no power.

hmmm first things to do

Pull the belt cover and check timing that way make sure the marks on the cams line up and also of the crank line up

its a 36mm nut to turn the crank by hand .

that would be what i would do first after that check your CEL either buy a hand scaner or get the car towed to the dealer.

but you could buy a obd2 code reader for the cost of the tow itself

after that get back to us on seeing if the timming is really of or its just s CEL .

might even just be a busted vac line or intercooler hose pope off.

Okay... work and this car are getting to me! Timing is all in check. Coil, plugs, rotor, cap,,are all good. Looks like I'm heading in the direction of CPS. Going to check resistance and voltage across VSS and CPS.

Car idles very rough and sounds like it hits a dead spot occassionaly... which might be exhaust build up in cylinder?... Which might mean CPS not doing it's job?

Does it idle better with the MAF disconnected?

...If not, look for a busted idle motor hose or major vacuum leak in the intake side of the equation. I think the cam position sensor is more of a fail / work type of part. My old 240 would give an intermittent problem with the cam sensor, but I think these 850/x70 types really die when they die.

How can fuel fouling and flooding be corrected? My guess is that could be correct since excess fuel was poured into each cylinder from last weeks desperation move. Since the adding of excess fuel, car has been started and driven down the road with the rough idle and so on, but no improvements in performance.

Maybe its just the cold. Maybe just start it and let it warm up on its own for a while (maybe 20 minutes) and then take it on a drive to make sure everything has defrosted and is running normally. My car runs well but on really cold morning, it starts to give problems. I just let it warm up really well and it drives fine thereafter.

Check out this thread, It may possibly be the problem.
