Ghost Shadow
refresh my memory.... the unit you sent in was from of the XC right? or was it an "extra"? it's not from the C70... that much we do know.were any lights on or was anything funky happening with the XC prior to the ETM giving up the ghost?there's just something that isn't adding up... and it's probably something simple... it usually is... yes, unit i sent in for repair was from the XC70.XC70 had the ETS light on for a few weeks before it gave up. i resetted the light in those few weeks by disconnecting the battery. it died on me once before, limp home mode. it had erratic idle before it died the last time. when it died the last time finally, i tried the battery disconnect tha worked before but not the last time. everything pointed to the ETM.to internet-diagnose something is tough, but rest assured that the 5 hrs i spent swapping stuff on superbowl sunday was not the way i planned on. you are right it is simple, move the ETM from the XC70 to the C70, it no workie. Move the ETM from the C70 to the XC70 it workie.

Move the ETM from the C70 to the XC70 it workie. is/are the code(s) stored in the ECU and does it need to be cleared out? is the ECU possibly still "thinking" the defective unit is in the car? it works fine in the c70 correct? if so... this lead me to think there (in theory) isn't a problem with the new ETM

ETM Unit; my car does not have the ETS code, but it does give me a funky idle and erratic boost from time to time, the dealer said "clean the ETM". Instead I'm going to invest in this product.Keep us updated! Juan

I see things in a different light. I see how chris can get defensive about his product. Chris certainly does have alot of time and energy devoted to this product. I absolutly thank you, and i am sure alot of effected ETM people out there thank you for bringing this product to market. i absolutly feel anyone that is thinking about getting this repair and is waiting for my outcome, stop thinking about it. Just do it. As many ETM's that XeMODeX has shipped and lucky me, i get the one unit that is defective. Good thing that its me, a person that is more than capable and WILLING to help Chris find out WHY did this unit not work right out of the box. I am sure tomorrow i will get my ETM from Chris, I will install it and report back like all the other customers out there and say it works great and will be thanking chris for a great product. Now why did ETM swapping between cars work is another question. From what i have been told, it should not have worked and could have really effed things up. Stayed tuned to the ETM network, the Following has been a public service announcement to test the nation volvo broadcasting system!!! :D
1999_V70
Let us know what happens. I've always been critical of this company's high cost of the rebuilt modules, this thread isn't making me any less apprehensive to drop a significant amount of money on this as opposed to the Volvo unit. Call me when they're 200-300 bucks. ;)
decker
you probably should just go ahead and get the Volvo unit.... seriously!!! http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?s...t&p=1495704
1999_V70
I don't need either.............yet. Hopefully the bugs will be worked out for the Xemodex ETM and the price will be lower by the time mine fails. They WILL have a sale.
Ghost Shadow
Let us know what happens. I've always been critical of this company's high cost of the rebuilt modules, this thread isn't making me any less apprehensive to drop a significant amount of money on this as opposed to the Volvo unit. Call me when they're 200-300 bucks. to all the people out there that is thinking this same thing:Lets weight things out.Volvo ETM $550 USD XeMODeX ETM $599 CDN x (0.8250 as of 1/30/2009) = $495USD return freight includedVolvo Software $85 estimate XeMODeX Software $0.00Volvo Installation $150 (Langhorne PA Volvo) XeMODeX $0.00Flatbed to Volvo dealer $150 average XeMODeX - FEDEX/UPS/USPS/DHL $90-125 averageThrottle Gasket $10 Throttle Gasket $0.00 includedTime = 1 day Time = 3 daysFinal Cost $795 plus taxes 6% $47.70 Final Cost $595 average no taxTotal : $847.70 Add in labor for removal and towing $250 Total $845Will it fail again? YES, NOWhen? Your guess is as good as mine No, see above. That is piece of mind in itself.Warranty? 10years in service or 200k LifetimeWhen all variables are weighed out, it will cost about the same price. Only difference is will it ever fail? it will not fail when you have the volvo going on a family road trip, it will not fail when you need the volvo the most. Until you experience a failing ETM, you may say "oh another thread on the damn ETM failing again, hope that doesn't happen to me. shit". Just because the XeMODeX ETM is on the market should be a blessing. We can now have a CHOICE. i doubt the ETM will come down in price considering all the R&D needed to bring this to market. how many units does XeMODeX have to sell to break even? I am sure we are not talking about 1000 pieces, with a profit of $50-100 each. that's only $50 to 100k to recoup the costs of development. ehh maybe in a few years it can get lower, but I need it now. i want piece of mind. Do i want it cheaper, sure. Do i want to be cheap about it? No. Would i say it is too expensive when i do not need it? yes, i'd do that and try and get the price lower. I would like to say its too damn expensive too, but the mere fact that this unit NOT fail again is priceless.Lets stay focused to the ORIGINAL POST. You can debate the cost in another thread if you like. Please keep this thread clean of opinions and stick to the OP. New ETM is going to be at my work tomorrow! Yeah.Stay Tuned to the ETM channel boys and girls!
1999_V70
R&D? I'm not an expert by any means, but didn't they just replace one sensor with another sensor?
Ghost Shadow
R&D? I'm not an expert by any means, but didn't they just replace one sensor with another sensor? If its simply put like you did, then this question will come to mind. WHY DID volvoNOT COME UP WITH THIS REDESIGN?Again, back to the original post.
1999_V70
It was probably cheaper for them to extend the warranty than recall the units. If they recalled it would have been valid on a 17 year old car with 435k miles on it, with the extended warranty their liability is limited and in the end they're the ones winning. And yes, back to the OP!
volvo-tech
It sounds like you need to download the right software in the ETMs. Keep one in XC70, then download the right software and some with the C70. You know both of your vehicle are covered under warrenty for the ETM.. 200k or 10 Year. Have both of your vehicle had the 155 recall software downloaded? decker
Have both of your vehicle had the 155 recall software downloaded? To the best of my knowledge all that does is raise the idle speed... in other words it gives the mylar strip a new place to wear out... which doesn't actually fix anything in the long run right? (of course... I could be wrong... this is just my speculation)fail----> http://www.weblogsinc.com/common/images/75...865428159682073 <----fail
