Here's the mylar strip (contacting piece) in the ETM's that

FAILS-->figure7.gif<--FAILS

And you are correct- all the software upgrade does is change the location of the arms on the piece of myar to a new location...eventually it wears through again. What was Magneti Marelli thinking...of course, metal rubbing against plastic won't work.

Incase anyone has forgot what yeat it is , it is 09 so only now 00 cars are covered.

Since its build date not buy date.

Justin,

I agree that most '99 models are now running out of coverage. It is (as with all warranty repairs) based on the original retail date though (not the build date). This date can be pulled up at the dealer with the rest of the vehicle information...

this is why i am where i am.

Original delivery date 10/9/1998.

Volvo told me to fuck off, in more or so words. "Sir, We do apologize. When it comes to this ETM warranty, we must abide by the rules. Your car must have the proper code in order for us to replace the ETM. At this very moment , Sir, we can offer you at no charge to you a ETM cleaning and Software update." -Sept 2008

BINGO!!! It's like trying to use the same 8" of toilet paper to wipe your a$$ with for the rest of your life.

If the new DAS design works as it should... I would expect it to last the life of the car... in theory.

Well... then the "cleaning" of the ETM is like trying to "clean" that same 8" of t/p... totally pointless.

UPDATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please call the fire department to put this fire OUT! ------> ETS light.......

Got the unit about 40 minutes ago, FEDEX driver was a BITCH! I wanted to cunt punt her.

Immediatly pulled the XC70 in. I got this ETM removal down to a 20 minute job. It is taking me longer to write this post than to install it!! :D:D:D

Please disconnect the battery before attempting to install the ETM.

1: this will reset the ETS light if it was on (mine was off)

2: YOU CAN HIT THE STARTER POSITIVE TERMINAL AND CAUSE A SHORT WHEN YOU REMOVE/INSTALL THE ETM

Installed it, connected the battery, check connections, and started her up. fired up like nothing ever happened. Idles smooth, and drives great.

Piece of mind is priceless!!!!!

Sweet news! So what do you think was the problem? Faulty ETM rebuild? Perhaps...or maybe the software it it got corrupted?

So For the first time you removed the ETM did you have to remove the starter as well? I was looking at mine the other day and it looks like it is the original ETM and likely wired with the cable harness behind the starter.

my guess... the new ETM momentarily became part of his car's electrical system... cuz he didn't disconnect the BaTTree... and fried it!!! :o

yup... whatever you do... DON'T CUT THE CABLE!!! you will have to remove the bolts to get the cable out... then once the cable is out put the bolts back in and fohgettaboutit.

:excl: (do disconnect the battery)

the manufacturer is working on an video they will be posting on their site for removal and replacement for this part... soon i was told.

Listen knuckle head!! :D

I wrote YOU have to disconnect the battery, just like I did! :P

This ETM is a very crucial to XeMODeX. We can only speculate what could have been wrong. Which we should not do that. We need to wait on XeMODeX to find out what was wrong with this unit. I did everything i could on my end. Guys its a simple install, just like changin the oil. its a shame Volvo charges so much to do the job.

I have a 15 mile drive home tonight and i will fill in driving impressions then. but the 5 miles i did drive today so far and been flawless just like it should be.

Been thinking about this...talked to Lucky last night when I ordered some stuff.

Apparently there are 3 different softwares that can be loaded for the ETM for any of the effected cars.

I'm thinking that XeMODeX has to know which one your car has in order to match the internals of the rebuild to it.

Maybe they got that wrong? Anyway, don't go having any Dealer ETM upgrades with the new ETM in your car!

To the ORIGINAL POSTER: Please go back to the other forums now where you cast some doubt on this product and give the outcome of how things turned out. For one, over at MVS, some were waiting on your fix before they "pulled the trigger" on this ETM.

I ran 120V from my wind farm right to the connector of mine... then removed all four bolts with a slide hammer and a pry bar!!!

So... did you disconnect the battery?

AND... I'll take the extra 5 minutes to remove the fan/shroud... I don't have arms and hands like a twelve year old girl...

I hope I'm not jinxing myself or my ETM by messing with you... but it's fun!!! :P
