? About '98 S70t5 Factory Alarm

Hi, all:

Long time reader, first time poster. I have a recently acquired '98 S70t5 with a checkered history--it has 116k miles, has been in an accident, and has a Not Actual Mileage title. I've been over the car thoroughly, as has the Volvo dealer, and there really isn't much wrong with it despite its abuse history. :D Anyway, to my current issue, it is my understanding from the manual that this car comes with a factory alarm.

My remote works perfectly fine and all functions work. Panic does set off the horn (which isn't necessarily an alarm function on most cars, although the car does have the aux siren under the hood). However, the alarm will not arm. No blinky dashboard light ever, can't set it off, etc. I'm stumped. I have checked both fuses related to the Immobiliser in the engine compartment. No luck. Swapped with known good fuses just to make sure I wasn't missing a small break in the fuse. Nada.

Where would I start troubleshooting the problem? I am a certified audio installer (was in a past life) and know my way around electronics pretty well, but if someone knows where the alarm brain is, that would be a great help. I have a suspicion that the brain is disconnected as a result of trauma or forgetfullness by repair people. Thanks in advance!

David

P.S. Things I had to do to the car to make it right:

-New tires (old ones were cupped, so put on Kumhos, nice tires)

-control arms and sway bar links

-alignment

-driver's door lock motor (despite the fact the lock worked fine by remote, the key would not unlock the door!)

-Miscellanious bulbs including a bunch for cockpit switches and one fog light

-oil return line seal

-cabin air filter

-topped off coolant (am watching to see what happens--every once in a while I have a heater-corish whiff of antifreeze smell in the cockpit, but I'm hoping it's my imagination).

-New back rotors and pads (back rotors had a pile of rust around their insides that was so thick it made the parking brake drag!)

Still need to fix/do:

-The alarm

-power antenna (Why can't Volvo make one that works?)

-Steering knuckle makes a little clunk when turning back and forth--I've been told not to worry about it.

-Front brakes in next 5k miles

-Struts next year

-Probably should do a full service soon--if it's any indication of neglect, the cabin air filter was disgusting.

So, you are saying that the locks work with the remotes and there is no problem with the alarm causing any problems with the functionality of the car.

The only issue is that the alarm does not arm? I personally wouldn't waste any time on it. If a thief really wants to take the car they won't care about the alarm.

I have a 98' also and have had it since new and have never heard the alarm go off. The cool little LED lights and blinks but I have never actually heard it work, and the car is going on 7 years old.

Don't mean to ramble but I really wouldn't worry about it to much

Good Luck

Yes, but if it's a simple problem, why shouldn't I attempt to make it functional? My belief has always been that if it came with the car, it should work. Besides, in my neighborhood, the deterrent LED would be helpful.

If the LED doesn't arm and start blinking then the most common problem is one of the locks or micro switch on the lock isn't closed. Start with the drivers side hood lock thats the most common. Make sure the electricial connector is there and hooked up to the drivers side hood lock. With the hood up close it manually and see if you can get the LED to light up. If not the hood lock it could be one of the doors, drivers being most used I'd start there.

I have the same problem with my alarm not sounding but it will lock, unlock, blink and I even hear the relay going off and the hazards are blinking but no sound. I'm taking it to the dealer since they should take care of it since I bought the car only a month ago.

I have the same problem with the remote/alarm system. It will lock, unlock (except front passenger side) and blink. My front driver side lock tap won't go up and down when I lock or unlock the car, but the door does lock and unlock. My front driver side won't unlock, (it does lock) I have to pull the tap manually. So any suggestion?

Agreed... If you want an alarm, just have an aftermarket one installed by professionals.. at least that way you know it'll work.
