Smoke When Turbo Kicks In Upon Rapid Accelleration

In the early mornings when i am headed to work its dark out and while lookin in my rearview mirror I can see some sort of smoke coming out of the exaust upon accelleration when the turbo kicks in. If I gradually get up to speed with the turbo kickin in it does not do it. Only when I am getting on it. I am also noticing oil disappearing. I have no oil leaks. 168K miles. 2.3 turbo, 1992 940. Please help before I take this in to get serviced as I dont want to know what VOLVO charges

Valve guide seals, once warmed up they swell and the smoking will subside, after awhile they will be completely shot and you'll see it all the time.

But yes you could be leaking around the turbo and blowing oil into exhuast.

Turbo valve seals?

What the fuck is a turbo valve seal?

I have never in my life seen a valve inside a turbo but regardless it sounds like it could be one of 2 things. As someone else mentioned its not likely the "Valve Seals" since they smoke mostly at idle. Piston rings are a possible cause but usually this increases with cylinder pressure (and boost) or secondly "Turbo seals" if your turbo has shaft play so take of the intake boot and give it a feel.

it does not smoke at idle. I cannot see any smoke at all in the daytime whatsoever. Only in the morning when I head out to work. the car runs very very well and I have not noticed any decrease in power at all

Yeah I'd still say the turbo valve seals are you number 1 culprit. When they start to smoke at idle, there is no hope. So you can try make your turbo last as long as possible but you will end up having to get a replacement if it is indeed the valve seals. And if it is the valve seals you most likely have sludge in your engine which I believe is the most common cause of this problem since these turbos don't just 'die'. I am not too sure what you can do to delay further deterioration of the valve seals since I would think running a heavier weight oil would only make things worse for the sludge already built up in the turbo oil return line. I suppose you could take off the oil return line and clean the catch 'filter' in the oil pan but if you're going to go through that much work you might as well replace the turbo as well.

I can also attest to the fact that I did not notice any deterioration in performance both times when my turbo went.

When you first start it or when the engine is cold? etc.. etc..?

Also, I am still trying to find more information about this "Turbo Valve Seal" I hear they are prone to come out on full lunar eclipses when a newborn unicorn is born.

I only see it in the mornings as it it dark and the cars headlights behind me enable to to notice it. Daytime running it hard I cannot notice any smoke. I just located a volvo only repair shop right around the corner from me. I let it run for about 30-60 seconds before i head out for work. again it only does this at high rpms on the highway when I am accelerating

And again, most likely it's your turbo seals, agreed that valve guides would most likely show up at start up and idle, but if he is only giving 30-60 sec of warm up he could be seeing it, especially with a cold engine, and boostin'.

I just got the oil changed and the guy that worked there said beautiful car, I told him what year it was then he stated he use to work on them at a dealership for 7yrs. I asked him about this issue. before i could finish he said it was the seals. Then he stated the turbo would have to be rebuilt or replaced. he said it would be under 1K. what do you guys think this might run. how long do you think I have. I noticed today the smoke is black not white or blue.
