Dyno'd The T5-r

My buddy is a member of the BC BMW club, and they had some spots open at their Dyno day out in Abbotsford, BC @ Miller Performance. We were all given the opportunity to do 2-3 pulls, no tuning, just pulls, but it was fun.

My buddy decided to bring out his TR8 instead of his Beemer, so the two of us were a little out of the ordinary which was fun. Lots of sweet Beemers there, and lots of $$ too...good grief...

Anyway, enough with the pre-amble, onto the results.

1st Pull @ 14psi

230whp/241ftlbs

2nd Pull @ 16psi

245whp/251ftlbs

3rd Pull @ 18psi

242whp/248ftlbs

I was very happy with the results, and again, not that this needs to be proven but it's obvious the 16t is outta breath above 16psi.

My mods are: 16T, 3"dp, 2.5 EST exhaust, vibrant sport cat, MSD ignition, RIP Kit, RICA Stage 2 ECU, Forge Motorsports MBC. (Auto btw)

The best part was when my buddy's TR8 pulled 200whp!! We were expecting 140whp tops! He bought the car a couple years back but didn't know the history of the motor build etc...(it's the original Rover V8 that they came with, but it appears to have been decently modified.)

I don't know a whole lot about this sort of thing but why is the torque right in line w/ hp? I was under the impression it's usually higher by a decent amount.....

To be honest, that's what I was expecting too...not knowing enough about the finer details of the tune, it may be set up that way to some degree, but I have a hunch it has to do with the car being an Automatic, and dyno'ing and Auto is a bit strange compared to a manual...but that's just a guess on my part...maybe someone will chime in who knows more.

Either way they seem like nice numbers as far as I know...are you happy with them?

these cars are designed to be torquey. horsepower requires air flow, and you can only flow what your heads will allow.

and you will find this to be the case with any low displacement / small turbo engine.

a nice tall torque curve at a low RPM, most often peaking higher than HP.

HP is a relationship of torque and RPM. Generally torque numbers go down as peak hp moves past 5252RPM. The lower the RPM that a engine tends to make good HP numbers usually the better the torque figures. But this is simplifying it. His numbers really need to have RPM reading with them.

Regardless of the torque HP question, those are nice numbers.

I am VERY happy with the numbers...given everything I've read on the board with regards to the limits of the 16t, I'd say I'm right at the limit, and that's fine by me...

As for the RPM, ya, that was a problem, we couldn't get a clean RPM signal, too much "noise" at the distributor, and I'm didn't have time to remove the plug cover to get the RPM clamp farther away from the distributor.

Next time I'll be sure to have the cover off prior to going, and I should be back out there in June as I'm going to be putting on an R-Manifold sometime after IPD in May. It was a total blast, the car sounded just ferocious up at 6000rpm...

I took my video camera, but unfortunately I had forgotten to charge the battery, so it died with only a tiny bit of footage...I'll post that up eventually, but it's pretty useless as it didn't capture much...

Getting a good RPM reading would be good. Most of my Dyno experience comes from the motorcycle racing angle. So it might be a little different. But there are a few things I have learned over the years. First and foremost is that each dyno will give slightly different numbers with the same car/motorcycle. In addition the same dyno will give slightly different numbers day to day because of atmospheric differences. So all this really means is if your numbers were 5 HP lower than someone on the east cost with the same mod and same car it doesn’t mean squat. Your car might actually be putting out a few more HP. Don’t get too hung up on the exact numbers, things very a few HP from machine to machine and day to day. The real benefit of a dyno is looking at the chart that gets printed out. It usually shows HP in relation to RPM. Then below it shows a fuel/air ratio. This gives very valuable info because it shows whether dips in the HP are related to lean or rich fuel mixture problems. With bikes we usually look for a smooth linear HP graph, of cores peak HP is important to. :D But if there is a dip at 5000RPM (11,0000 redline on my V twin) or so it can usually be “tuned” out by working the adjustable fuel management systems we run. I am sure you guys do a lot of the same thing on a tuning run. For example if it was loosing power at redline and leaning out you might be looking for bigger injectors.

This is all just my experience with the motorcycle tuning.
