The 1996 850 Turbo uses M4.3 for the stock/factory Engine Control Unit. Unless you are running an ARD tune that is converted to M4.4, or at some point someone dropped in a M4.4 ecu from a S,V,C, or XC 70 you will have Bosch Motronic 4.3 ECU, which is not readable with VOL-FCR.

No.

With VOL-FCR 1.3 You CAN read OBDII ABS CODES and RESET SERVICE LIGHT on a 96 850 w/ a working OBDII port. You cannot use VOL-FCR to clear engine codes, and half the other features of 1.3 will suggest you to use a pushbutton/LED setup as if it was OBDI. That's about all Vol-FCR 1.3 can do with ME4.3

You need the proper cord, and i don't remember what the right chip is...there is a bunch of threads on it, but iirc it was just a general VAG-COM one. The virtual com port is fine, you need the FTDI driver if your using the USB cord version. I've always used XP, so i can't comment on if the drivers work in Vista or 7...

I have no clue on how Vol-FCR 1.7 works.

Worst case scenario, get an LED, resistor and switch and viola :P

I don't remember what VAGCOM

To clairify, I was not saying you cannot read any codes, just the ECU. In VOL-FCR the button is yellow and will tell you how to make the switch. The issue is only with M4.3, as M4.4 is fine. The poster was say they could not read the M4.4 ECU codes on their 96 850 Turbo; 96 850 Turbos used M4.3

As well, I have not yet used VOL-FCR1.7 so I cannot say if M4.3 readability has changed.

I've used RS232 serial cables and the FTDI USB VAG-COM cables, and the M4.3 readability remains the same, version 1.3 of VOL-FCR. I've used VOL-FCR in XP, Vista, and 7 without issue and I've used it on my 96 850R and 98 S70.

Gotcha  Just a misunderstanding on my part then.

Yea, the whole reading Engine codes through VOL-FCR is a no go like you said, but, there are many other programs out there which you could use to do that. I only read his initial post which seemed to say ABS, and i took it from there...but you are absolutely right. I love VOL-FCR for what it is, and if 1.7 read all the codes i would purchase it for simplicity. Otherwise...LEDs or VST(good luck buying one)

The cable I am using IS a Vag Com one, that I use on my Audi. And the cable is fine, and its drivers, as it WILL allow Vol Fcr to access my TCU and a few other things in there.

But on a spot of good news, Autozone was able to read my codes. So the port is fine too. Just can't seem to jive with Vol Fcr. Maybe it is because its a Mot 4.3? Either way, my issue is fortunately just a TPS. Part is coming in today.
