You're green and you come to our multi-color country. You should be able to stay green, teach your kids green, speak green. But part of being a "melting pot" is adding your own flavor. Raise cultural awareness about green, let people know where green people come from, but DON'T TRY TO MAKE PEOPLE WHO ARE MULTI COLORED BECOME GREEN. Melting pot means you blend in adding your own flavor, like chipotle in chili. Its not about being a cup of oil that taints the entire pot because it refuses to blend in or take in any other flavor.

While I'm sure Orwell is turning in his grave somewhere, I'm not certain that what we're seeing here is a modern exemplar of what he was allegorically protesting in 1984. The book was a reaction to state socialism, especially as it existed in the Soviet Union under Stalin, though Orwell certainly saw bits of that spilling over into English political life. Under Ingsoc, there was not enough freedom to publish a book or give a lecture that would offer the keys to the destruction of the system, which is a pretty significant point of departure.

Having lived in another country, I see the error in "accomodating" non-English speaking immigrants: bilingual signs, bank tellers, etc. I could find work as an English teacher, but I still had to know the local language in order to get things I needed. I also could not aspire to anything else if I did not speak the language fluently, which is why I wound up coming back to the U.S.

However, I'm not prepared to embrace Lou Dobbs and the whole wave of anti-immigration sentiment that seems to be in vogue. Knee-jerk xenophobia has been with us throughout history: it is the positing of "the other" and placing the blame for everything that is wrong on that group (see Germany in the 1930s for an illustration of this principal at work).

They didn't reject the old culture they just subordinated it to their new one. If you can't define a common language, how can you express any commonality?

Sean ... its the classic confusion of race and ethnicity. The five year old quoted email that was so eloquently reposted continues this thinking. Its the 500 lb. gorrila in the room that no one wants to talk about, let alone try to understand. Race and ethinicity have nothing to do with one another, yet white-blooded Americans believe it defines our culture.

Race is the color of our skin, our culture prescribes this for us, we have no choice. Ethnicity is a choice, when a race is dominant in a particular society.

We're lazy. Even monocultures with 2000 year old histories learn English as a second language from birth. Why, because we're so unbelievably great, measure things in inches and weigh things in lbs? Or do they get that education is the key to success in life?

How many "native" born white Americans are bilingual? I guess its limited experience, and special circumstances, but the isolationalist attitudes IMO will not do "our" country any good.

I fully realize a difference between the two. It's about a culture, or a state of mind, not the color of the skin or the nation of origin. Why are people coming here for 300 yrs? No one seems to be leaving, tho a bunch threaten to all the time, (please Alec Baldwin , just go). If you car about being here and want to use our resources, get with the program and contribute to the community, don't try to separate and reinvent the greatest experiment in human history.

We're not perfect, but America is the closest to anything out there. You can not compare us to other nations. No other nation has given hero's lives to keep other nations free like us. No other nation has contributed more to the African AIDS epidemic than we have, nd no one provides the liberty and opportunity to others like we do.

Sweden population is a tad over 9 million. We have over 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. Lets dump that relative number in Sweden's society and see what happens. I'm betting they stop them at the borders. You can't keep comparing 300 million to countries that have populations that are <10% of that.

If we adhered to the founding documents, much of this corruption, waste and fraud would not exist, and folks would be wealthier and more self sufficient. And not as whiny.

I've been putting cash in the bank with side jobs, and am going back full time on 8/24. Like I said, the rich folks are spending money again, and I love them for it. I always find a way to pay the bills.

My wife does very well working for a bank, of all places. Great bennies too. We pay for some of it, but it sure beats the looming alternative.

newspeak was the dumbing down of the language i thought and wasn't ingsoc English Socialism in newspeak? shorten and combine words to shrink the language. it was language destruction.
