MyCarIsRed
Haven't looked into the picoatx stuff lately. How does the VIA stuff stack up against Intel? Via has always been a low power oriented company, so i trust their stuff, but i honestly havent used either brand in an intensive situation. Most of the stuff i end up using at work is more industrial oriented simply to reduce repair issues and costs. Recently i've been doing exhibits that get loaded and trucked every 4 months, and need to run for years, so I keep risk down as low as possible. I'm a huge fan of these right now. Little pricey for consumer end, but when you're dealing with labor costs it's well worth the extra $$ out front.
nari
Nice progress! How does the hard drives stand up against bumps and stuff? I pretty much sure in my car I couldn't use a HDD. Flashdrives looks promising but expensive. for the love of building stuff imo exactly ;)

Im running a 32gig solid state drive in mine. But its mostly for the extremely quick boot times.
yangotang
I have a 4GB IDE module as the primary storage, then a secondary 2.5" SATA 100GB drive. My plan is to eventually convert the secondary hard drive to a SSD in the near future.

Ipd
This may be me being a simpleton, but to what end does the car PC contribute? I mean, what are they typically used to do? DVD player? Music? Nav? If I could get consistent wireless without having to tether to my phone I guess I could see more usability.
Che'_Moderator
several dozen people on the carpc forums run normal desktop IDE drives without problem for several years. Their dumb lol. I used to do systems for combat and there are several ways to deal with vibration and impacts. As someone else pointed out some of the new laptops like my sony have drives that lock when the vibration does over a preset limit. The better way though are fluid dampeners. I have them under all my electronics and have never even had the drives lock and thats on 380lb springs and 35 profile tires Full sled for the AV case would be better but really no needed unless you are tracking your car with the computer running. But theoretically it could be an issue. Im running a 32gig solid state drive in mine. But its mostly for the extremely quick boot times. I've been running a mechanical 3.5" IDE drive for about 3 years now in my carpc. Most of it's life spent on SF roads which are notoriously poor. Keep in mind, the hard drive is old (27GB) and was one I got on craigslist for free. No issues yet, so I'm happy. I keep an image of my carpc's setup (minus music and videos), so in case the drive dies, I just throw in a new one that's freshly imaged.
