Vibration Under Acceleration

Ha! I just replaced the right axle (empi) and the wheel bearing on my 96 850R cuz the cv boot was ripped, however I changed them like 2 weeks ago, oh i forgot to mention I did an aligment after the installation, and i'm having the same problem ( vibration from low to mid rpm's) as the mate that is asking for advice, the next thing that i'm gonna check might be the lower mounts and possibly the subframe mounts, unless someone else suggests something else....

So in your case, the vibration was not from the CV nor the wheel bearing. I had CV boot ripped apart before (passenger side) but did not have any vibration back then. So most likely, the replacement of the axle will not solve the problem. I will check engine mount next. I am going to replace the whole driver axle anyway because the axle is the original one, almost 14 years old with about 220k miles on it.

I'm gonna agree with you there. The tie rods are new, and the cv joints look brand new with no leaking. However, my steering rack boost is leaking, and has some grease kicked up under the car, but that wouldn't effect the acceleration.

So, engine mount it is.

Have you found the source of the vibration yet ? I replaced the driver side axle to fix the ripped CV boot. Vibration still there, I need to check all the engine mount.

Thanks,

I had the same problem on my 98 XC. It turned out to be a worn lower right engine mount (the one below the timing belt). Changed the mount and the car drives beautifully!

Thanks for the response. I definitely will take a look at that mount.

Hi everyone, I nave just bought a 2002 XC70 with the built in vibrator! The symtoms are very similar to those described. When accelerating gently, vibration is minimal, the harder the acceleration the more pronounced it is. This is the same at all speeds. The vibration is not felt through the steering wheel as much as through the chassis. It does not feel drive train issue, more engine mount. I like the lower engine mount theory. Did you replace it yourself, how difficult, and did it cure the vibration? Thanks Nick Walker, New Zealand

Yo nick...that thread is 2 years old so you may not get response from them.

The engine mount they are talking most about is exceptionally easy to replace. raise front end, remove passenger wheel, and look just beyond the fender liner on the subframe. IIRC, it is 2 bolts to the block and 2 (or3) to the subframe. Being as it is at the front of the engine it is often referred to as the front motor mount.

EDIT: just answering the part of your question about how to and how hard...can't attest to if it will fix your vibe...as Gary notes in the next post it copuld be other things including axels...

Good luck with this!! I have dumped THOUSANDS of dollars chasing this exact same problem and have come up with no solution. I've replaced many of the things twice, and the second time around had a shop do things to make sure it wasn't installer error. No fix.

I've done all of the following to try to fix the vibration under acceleration and none of these things fixed the issue:

1. Wheels from Perfo's to Konig Maxxim's

2. Hankook Tires

3. IPD springs with new shocks/struts and an entire new strut assembly including strut mounts.

4. Mahle endlinks

5. Both driver and passenger axles

6. Pass side tie rod

7. both control arms

8. Pass side Bearing

9. IPD firewall/engine mount

10. Alignment and 3 separate balancing sessions.

11. All new bolts and hardware for all of the things I tackled.

12. I also did a trans flush and fill (filled with Redline MTL)

After all of that that the vibration persisted. So I did the following:

1. Returned the wheels and had them give me new ones.

2. Returned the tires and got new ones

3. Returned the axles and went and bought Raxles axles

4. Pass side control arm and bearing collapsed after a few days of installing it so I had it replaced with a factory control arm and another bearing. Had mechanic install it this time.

5. Had the tires all Roadforce balanced

The result is the vibration is no different than it was when I first attempted tackling this thing. The only thing that happened is my wallet got much thinner to the tune of a few thousand dollars. My best advise is take it to a dealer and make them put it in writing that the fix they charge you for it will be a guarantee fix to eliminate the vibration. I bet a trip to the dealer to fix it will be MUCH cheaper than the route I took. Please learn from my mistakes.
