97 850 Glt..Is 16T Possible?

Hello VS, been a daily TB guy since 2003 and I've been registered (under another name) on VS for quite some time. Recently bought a 97 White 850 GLT, a good 8 months ago, it's been my DD since my 744 died (it's being rebuilt) but I find myself loving the 850 a little more. So recently I've been doing some modifications to the car and looking for some more power to match how it looks. It currently has the stock low pressure 13G turbo for my car and was wondering what kind of power it would produce with a straight flange 16T + RICA ECU + New EST Intake + IPD Ferreta Exhaust, and how difficult this whole procedure would be if I were to attempt this myself/

I also have some nagging issues with my car most recently. I'm getting a strange throttle whine which only occurs when its from a cold start, once the engine warms up after a 10 minute drive the whine is completely gone. So basically everytime I step on the throttle the whine is like a high pitched screech, pretty nasty and very loud. Once it's warmed up though it's virtually gone but when the car is idling, there is a slightrough idle noise, almost like a busted bearing or something.

I'm located in Toronto, Canada.

Thanks all...

You dont say how many miles but you BETTER check the timing belt and component schedule. It sounds like it could be any number of rotating parts but if it's in the timing belt path you can easily be looking for our third Volvo very soon.

Great advice. ^^^ There's so many moving parts......I would start with the easiest and investigate the timing belt job and when it was done last. Then I'd probably go on to examine the serpentine belt and ensure the tensioner is applying decent pressure. You can always remove the belt and handspin your accessory pulleys too.

Those modifications on your GLT are very possible. They will make for a very fun car.

Thanks for the advice, definitely it's in the timing belt path for sure. Car has 197K KMs (122K+ Miles). I'll check when the timing belt was last done, hopefully it's something relatively simple. I was first speculating whether it was was belt tensioner bearing or possibly the Power steering. Anyway, I'll be looking at it this coming weekend to get this problem solved.

About the 16T swap, if I do this upgrade, would it require a different ECU altogether rather than my stock ECU with a Rica upgrade? I was reading this forum awhile back about the 16T swap and one user started saying that he was having trouble maintaining turbo pressure. He mentioned that he needed a Bosch M 4.4 from a 850 Turbo T5 engine instead so that the boost doesn't cut out. does that have any merit?

No real need for an ECU tune if you can't do get one right now, though it's preferable. A '96-'97 850 T5 (M4.3) ECU will do the trick, use a '98 x70 T5 ECU and risk frying your AC.

I have a 96 turbo automatic ECU with your name written all over it!

PM offer if you want it. 072

Shoot me a PM, we're pretty close and I've already done everything to my LPT. I'll give you a ride in mine, you'll order everything as soon as you get home;)

Also, local meet in Milton coming up on Oct. 4, come on out!

Awesome. Yeah, not sure if I can make it out, but definitely interested in your mods on your GLT.

Have you dynoed your car? and what's your complete list of stuff you've done under the hood?

Have you listened to the squeal under the hood? My ps pump made a god awful squealing sound when the pump went, and the serp belt was bouncing due to the shot bearings in the pump.

What oil filter do you use? If you used one without a check valve you've starved the turbo of oil on startup (though i get the feeling you're likely aware of this).

Yep, I've listened to the squeel, it's still hard to determine where the noise is coming from. Visual inspections wheren't indicating where the noise was actually coming from, but it's definately in the same timeing belt line as the powersteering. So I'll be looking at that tomorrow.

I use the Mann W 917 oil filter which has a check valve(aren't they the OEM suppliers?).

yep, that's the one. You could always use the ol' tubing in the ear scope method. Interference engines and bad timing belts are a scary combo...
