Was that AWD? Good stuff man! Plots look very good. Peak torque before 4k and peak power at 6500ish... Nice!

Looks a little funky over 7k with high boost, what was it doing at that point?

Thanks, guys!

Not AWD, I had to yank the fore/aft DS for the dyno @ Carlisle. I hadn't driven the car at the higher boost level on that map, so I didn't want to go any higher without prior testing.

Do you mean in the 2nd pull, where the power drops off @ 7300? He was trying to decel without snapping the throttle shut.

Now I need to figure out how much more fuel/timing to add/subtract @ peak torque to safely bring it up to 350WHP.

I think more aggressive cams are next in line.

Excellent, finally! :D

Thanks for all your help with the 3" MAF map revisions! I'd like to send you my current tune, I'd appreciate any input you may have on tweaking for the timing pull areas in the peak torque range....

Awesome stuff Hussein!

Can't wait to see the car when I get back in a month.

It'll be good to see you too!

Car was so killer in person Hussein! Thanks for the ride to the grocery! :D

Thanks! Great to meet you too!

SWEET!

Glad to hear you finally got it all sorted. And that AFR is crying out for more boost :P

That will be soon - just have to sort out the timing pull in peak torque area... :)

You were a very happy individual when that second run ended.

As always love the XR. Very glad I got to see it.

I hope you hit your next goal. Keep documenting and I will keep reading!

  • 2 months later...

Well, I removed & rebuilt the 20g on Saturday. Exhaust side seal was blown - oil all over the heat shield, etc.. but bearings & thrust bearing were actually OK.

Anyway, after putting it back together I drove up to BMac's, and it kept smoking on high boost/heavy decel, just as it had before :(

I took a closer look at the old parts, and found this wear in the exhaust side seal.

That's supposed to be square cut, in case you didn't know. I have to assume therefore that the turbine/impeller wheel shaft seal seat area is worn, maybe from the first time with the damaged thrust bearing..

So, it looks to me like I need to buy a new turbine shaft :( Maybe I should upgrade the compressor side if I'm taking it all apart again...

That's a pretty nicely sized compressor wheel. Aiming for 450whp?

400WHP would be nice

Hahn doesn't list the inducer/exducer size of their 20g wheel, but listings online indicate a range of 52ind/68exd, so this should be a decent improvement, and I already have all the 3" inlet plumbing in place :D

So if you turn the boost right down it stops smoking?

That's some crazy wear. It seems like maybe the thrust loads on this turbo are just too high at your boost/flow rates or something. I mean every time it comes apart, it just looks pounded... :(

I know it's a pain to re-do lines and downpipes and etc, and I know this is kinda lame advice - but before you spend money on more parts and a bigger compressor capable of putting even more load on the turbine shaft, is it possible that it's time to consider something like a Precision billet turbo that's built to withstand 25+psi on a constant basis? Again I hate to say that probably almost as much as you hate hearing it... but that's my thoughts...
