Hussein's 1998 V70 Xr : The Force Awakens

I go back & reread sections, but I've never read through the whole thing! :D

I do trust my machinist, most of his work is on things like lambo/ferrari motors, & high output domestics. He works alone & really is a specialty shop.

I have to wonder though, about the Mahles. When I dropped the damaged ones off to show him, he had forgotten just how heavy they are, and it is still possible that piston slap has been a factor, even if the bores are straight. I'll weigh one of them & get a weight off one of the JE's when they come in for comparison. This may well have been a factor in my timing/knock issues going back, I would think.

The flange I used is sold on eBay for DSM applications, I just searched 16g, 20g wastgate. There are a few, some don't align well. Even the one I bought I had to oval the bolt holes. I do think it helped free up the flow though.

It's not a perfect alignment, but it's pretty good

The problem with using more than just the ME7 intake flange, is that the runners aren't even, #2 has that dogleg into the plenum bowl. I'd just cut off the flange with the injector ports & have runners welded to that. If I recall, 2" 6061 pipe squished a little in a vice fit nicely to the port.

If you start with this (6" runners, 5º offset on 1, 2, 4, 5)

you can pretty much build any plenum to suit your needs. It makes such a big difference to upper end breathing. You'll loose some low end torque, but if you're using an LPT motor, that shouldn't be bad.

I'm really happy I have the X1/9! It's been such a mild winter, I've been driving with the targa off many afternoons. I added the V70 cooling fan relay & wiring to it recently..

Using V70 ECT's for the L-Jet & 240 CIS system

Only had one day of snow, and that wasn't fun, so I put snows on, and it hasn't snowed again (of course)

It's handling is definitely compromised with the narrow, tall snows - I can't lane change at 80+ without it feeling a little 'squirrelly'....

I see some aluminum fab work in my future. I tried 2 different DSM flanges but sent them both back since they were too large. Perhaps I should have kept one and fudged the holes a bit:(

I wonder if the Mahle specs are a bit "loose" causing the slap, the machine shop was originally baffled and had to talk to Mahle to decipher the specs stamped on the pistons. Maybe just using standard piston clearances would have been better. I wonder if JE could make up some 9:1 83+mm pistons?

My dad bought a new 128 sedan in 1974 and I ended up driving the wheels off of it in the late 70's. The 1.3 l motor was bullet proof but I became quite a Fiat transmission repair guru. I think my last syncro replace job was 4 hours from jack up to jack down. I ended up fixing a few Fiats about that time and still rememeber trying to figure a way to keep that X1/9 targa from squeeking! That is a sweet example you have there and I am sure that cow-catcher front end is awesome in deep snow!

Yeah, the targa squeak is annoying - I've got household foam insulation wrapped around the locating tabs at the moment - but it still rattles of over bumps.

My trans is getting a little tough going into third - up or down, there is a little grindy going on...

I'm hoping I never have to drive it in deep snow - the spoiler is fine in fresh snow, but I'm sure hard packed ridges will bugger that nose in short order, even with the reinforcing I did to it.

JE can make anything you want, I'm sure. They're putting 23mm pin sizing in my short skirts to match the RSI rods.

Worked on the wiring today - and modified the side mount tray to include the stock locating tabs into the fender. I haven't liked the amount of 'give' in the tray since I installed it.

main harness - integrating COP, MAT, IAT, WI, into main harness.

IMG_0232.jpg

will be integrating coil pack harness in main

IMG_0233.jpg

with a connector by the ECU so I can switch from TT COP to VEMS when I have it ready. Figured out the Volvo part numbers for these GM style connectors so I can add the extra wiring needed.

Still working on the wiring. Added 4 extra wires in the main loom in case I need them later. Added a wire to the location of the OP Switch, in case I decide to add an oil pressure sender for logging in VEMS

IMG_0237.jpg

Have the "A" bridge wired for the OBDII ECU, which will drive the cluster, AC, cooling fans.

IMG_0251.jpg

IMG_0252.jpg

"B" bridge has to be done on the car.

Mostly done... much cleaner than what I had before - at least three separate harnesses I had added over the years are now integrated into this one.

IMG_0253.jpg

MAP & IAT are wired into the 4 unused pins in "A" (A1, A8, A40, A43). I'll configure the VEMS to utilize them, and when the TT ECU is in place, I just have to make sure nothing is plugged in to the other end of the harness. Even though the diagrams don't indicate any function ascribed to the connectors doesn't mean a signal passing through them won't cause issues.

Just have to add a wire to A27, a switched power source I missed (thanks,, Lucky!) then this end of the harness is done.

Better be.

Now is time to figure out how to create proper AWD system that volvo didn't developed . They don't have any snow up there in Scandinavia.

Or you should just draw some sketches and email it to volvo. I bet that yours AWD would be much better then current stuff they got. :)

LoL.

Used my new HackZall that arrived yesterday (thanks to Robbie for suggesting this tool in his BMW build thread)

IMG_0254.jpg

putting the TT COP in an old TCU, just to tidy up the ECU box & reduce the # of connections

IMG_0256.jpg

bridge harness & 1 connection from ECU to COP will be eliminated

IMG_0255.jpg

The large connector allows me to unplug the COP harness (integrated into engine harness) & plug it into the VEMS ECU once I have that sorted out.

Would the Haldex center diff. from the S60/V70R work on the XC?

Finished up the TT COP in an ECU box.

IMG_0258.jpg

Eliminated all these connectors

IMG_0259.jpg

now fits together like this: (requires cutting off the offset alignment pins)

IMG_0260.jpg

ARD ECU is for use with VEMS once I get that sorted out.

Have to gut this ECU and build the VEMS into it's place, using all the stock pinouts, plus some of the spares for MAT/IAT & COP

nice progress, i agree with ben, the ammount of work you get done is outstanding!

Nice to see that hackzall worked out, its great for smaller stuff like cutting ecus haha!

Whats the deal with the ard ecu for use with the vems? is that so you can piggy back with the vems and not have a cel or have the stock ecu freak out?
