dougy
it's not better than K&N in my opinion but size wise gives you more room on the inside. http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-x-6-S-B-AAF-Power-Stack-RED-cone-air-filter-/280748613990?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item415debe166&vxp=mtr
lookforjoe
Dougy, I don't need links to cheap filters. I already have that brand new 3" ID inlet filter The extreme has the pleated inlet cone, and this version also has deeper pleating for more filer surface area, I'm all good with this. dougy
oh i know, you should try it...I have one set up on my 850, it's pretty good...but nothing beats Apexi which includes K&'sN deeper pleating is your custom aluminum radiator same as 850? I was thinking about getting one for 850.

I was thinking about getting one for 850. I think you're mistaken about the Apexi - the last one I bought was definitely not as good as the K&N, not bad enough to throw out, so I cleaned & re-oiled it for use on my X1/9. The x70 rad design is the same as 850. The design/drawings I gave them has no coolers, so you would have to either delete yours, or get a quote with them added. dougy
well, apexi is a dry filter, i can tell you on my s60r which is more sensitive than yours or 850's K&N will throw a code and so does that other one , but not my APEXI.. ever...i dont have any cooler running though my radiator anymore, but is it the same or does anyone carry it that you know of? Hmm... maybe I shouldn't have oiled it then I don't know anyone who carries a 3" core custom 870 radiator, if that's the question. Howe Racing made it to my specification. They said they keep the drawings, but even if they don't I have them in my thread....

Volvo5.0
A lot of talk about the '04 and later engines having "better" internals. I know your using RSI rods for your build, and I would too considering your goals, but could you post a picture of the stock rod from the '04 engine next to the stock rod from the '98. Do they really have more "beef" to them, or is it just a myth?
andyb5
The rod is longer, but the main difference and improvement in strength is due to the composition of the rod. See Wizzard_Al for a bit of a more detailed explanation.

Do they really have more "beef" to them, or is it just a myth? I have both stock rods here at home. I'll take pics tomorrow. The machine shop reckoned they looked better than the old rods, but I can't recall specifically what he said about them. Worked on the WG this afternoon - arrow indicates clearance off of header cleaned up the inside porting have to add EGT ports - one underneath by #4 the other on the WG dump tube I also need a 3/16 EBP port somewhere on there... Overall arrangement will now be something like this

Rsterns
H, Haven’t been over here in a while, and just caught up with your thread. I don’t know if you’ve assembled the bottom end yet, but if not, as a minimum, IMHO, get the pistons, rings, and bearings Cryo treated. Shipping on the light parts is nothing compared to the benefits. When I did my first build, I was stupid and used OEM rods, which I bent. I had Cryo treated everything. At work, I have access to very accurate measuring equipment, and I had mapped the head surface prior to my first assembly. End to end it was flat within .0002, when I pulled the head after 40K miles, to start over again, it mapped at .0004 end to end. So not only do things run cooler, due to the created micro grain structure, this confirms to me that the head was for the most part completely stress relieved. The biggest issue that I see with cryo treatment is the lack of empirical data to support it. Obviously I’m a believer, and I’d think with what you’re building, you’d be looking for any benefits you can find.
lookforjoe
^ Thanks. I checked into cryo treatment around here. The closest, in Long Island, would end up costing more than another short block :(
