Worked on the WI reservoir in the frame rail today

Cut off all external tabs, section into three

heat weld lid back on to lower section

test fit in frame rail - had to cut a little material off the bottom right of the tank due to reinforcement inside the frame rail, thaty also meant losing the level sensor mechanism

mounted the filler neck in the opening of the tank previously used for the top pump, then cut a hole in the frame rail to match the revised position - 6.25" (on center) back from the edge of the rail

put the header panel & left headlamp back on to check clearance

will have to modify the filler neck to clear battery, headlamp & air box once that's fitted.

Tank holds a little over 3 quarts. Now I have to reroute the WI feed & pickup from the right side frame rail & stock WW tank.

Be sure to put your pickup hose at the rear bottom of the tank so you dont run dry while accelerating. I am sure you know that but just say'in. Cool idea but I am worried you'll find yourself filling that every few days.

Agreed. A shallow, flat tank like that is a bad plan.Once it's 1/2 full or less the meth will tend to "slosh" away from the pick up.

Its not flat. The forward edge is the shallowest point, it tapers down & back from there. The rear is the deepest, and where the pickup is. It's a stock V70 reservoir (below), cut down & mounted backwards, specifically so the deepest part is rearward

May want to use the stock washer reservoir for the meth. and using the "cut down" tank for washer fluid. The original reservoir also has the level sensor that will warn you when the meth is low.

I may do it that way, but... that means modifying the new tank for TWO pumps, since I have a wagon..... I think it'll just be easier to check the level & monitor consumption.

I can see the pics of it. Relatively speaking, that tank is flat. Trust me.

So basically, you have removed the level sensor, installed it inside the frame rail so you can't tell how much is in there at a glance, and made it shallower.

That is a seriously bad combination of mods right there, bud. If it does slosh away while you are accelerating at full boost and you lose methanol flow? What are you going to do about it? The nice thing about having the level sensor is once it's at the "slosh" level. the idtio light flashes when you go around corners, etc.

In your scenario the warning system is another dead piston, i guess....

Redid the tank yesterday. I wasn't able to utilize the stock wagon lower pump pickup, and the bottom of the tank wasn't flat enough in the back to use the Aquamist pickup out the base & through the frame rail.

So, I used an S70 tank, which is basically flat, and put the feeder at the lowest point. I retained the level sensor; as has been pointed out, it's just not going to be safe to run without it. Also added a vent tube, it's a PITA to fill a tank without one.

have to figure out the correct depth to set the level probe, so that it reads low at the appropriate level

it's set at an angle in the frame rail, so that the fluid will run to rear of the tank as the level drops

tried a shortened stock filler neck, but I found it interferes with the headlamp

the additional 2" should put it just above the battery level, this pic shows a stock length neck, which fits, but no room to get a cap on it

Worked on the VEMS board - figured out how I'm going to deal with the heat sink issue. Basically, copied the VEMS install, as indicated by Karl B.

Heatsink sandwich - non (electrically) conductive sheet has to be installed between FETS & heatsink for final install. Still haven't addressed the solder on the ground legs of the FETS.

Still have much wiring to do on the board itself, then all the pinouts from the MB to the Motronic connector have to be wired/soldered. I get dyslexic with stuff like that, so I have to be very careful, and follow schematics I have made that cross reference the VEMS board to the Motronic.

Also redid the WI nylon feeder line to the pump - now goes from the tank in the left rail to the pump in the right. Removed the stock reservoir with Aquamist feeder elbow & installed used original tank. Once I get the electrics hooked up, I'll have to pressure/leak test it before bumper, etc., goes back on. I need a working car to plug the level sensor into - I have to adjust the probe to the reduced height tank & make sure the sensor works before the tank is installed. Then I have to wire an LED for the level indicator.

how much did you save by buying the unassembled vems unit?

I bought the preassembled ms2 and vems, never regreted that, for me its time that is better spent somewhere else and the piece of mind that the guys that build them everyday assembled it.

I assume you just wanted the experience from it?
