Dick Dastardly
that's too bad about those packs. That kind of stupid shit always pisses me off..just something that shouldn't happen... but its what ends up causing the irritating problems that waste time and money
NEU
That reminds me to inspect mine... You could go with P2 R coils, they are 15% hotter then regular COPs, IPD was 18%. I think the rubber ends need to be modified since they ran different (colder??) plugs.
andyb5
Seems like the Rs have different, longer plugs, so wouldn't that mean the coils are different too?
NEU
The internal contact is on a spring that can be stretched and you swap the shorter rubber boot use a longer boot. Shorter R COP is on the left,

I've already installed the new Bosch coilpacks, so I'll see how they hold up. In a few hard pulls yesterday evening, I experienced no breakup/uneven running. Trying to wrap up the VEMS, it's frustrating because I am totally unfamiliar with the software & the config files/setup values. Justus has offered to help with that, possibly with a remote login so he can look at the setup windows & help me out.
Johann
How do you want to fit plugs which are to long? I think the COP gimmick has something wrong with the charge time of the coil. Normally the charge time should be between 2 and 2.5 ms. The older setup with the single coil needs 3 to 3.5 ms.

I was curious about the difference in the plugs - from the 2004 ew car features it appeared that the longer reach was due to the MLS gasket - are the pistons more dished? The head certainly is not different. Don't know about the charge time. It's only the IPD coils that have failed - the used Volvo coils were fine. I'll check with TT on specifics of the COP specifications anyway.
wizzard_al
The plugs were different on "R" cars, becuase the head was thicker than the standard heads. The T5 from '05, I think, had the same head, so they had to use the same longer reach plugs. Head gasket had nothing to do with it, nor did the pistons. It's essentially identical to the head of the 2.5 found in the S40/XC90 from that era.

lookforjoe
Correct. It's essentially identical to the head of the 2.5 found in the S40/XC90 from that era. I didi not know that - I thought the head castings were the same. That rules out using R coils, then. I don't like the idea of stretching the contact spring that far. I'll have to see if I can get a used R coil & evaluate it further. My plugs - look pretty even to me - I did close them up from .030" to .028", just to see if that changes anything, drivability-wise
Jardim
21 PSI Hussein? Get this thang on a dyno! Hope these new COPs hold up.
dublin14
Well Hussein I guess the HD in those IPD coil packs should stand for "highly delicate'? And for the fact that another IPD coil broke up and you were at 21psi with that big ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD turbo is never a good recipe for the motor. So maybe going back to the OEM coils that never gave you an issue is the best choice at this time. I would even be inclined to ask/demand IPD for a full refund as you have a dam good reason for it since they all failed. On lighter note, I bet it was nice to feel 21psi on that 6262 thats just really waking up at that point. Edited September 16, 2012 by dublin14
lookforjoe
Honestly, I'm not really comfortable running 21psi with ME4.4 & my current injectors - I've already hit 84% duty cycle, at relatively low rpms. The car runs really well at 17-18psi, with no timing pull, very nice overall feel to it. 20psi although it feels f'king awesome under accel, puts my gut in a knot, having already melted one set of pistons. I will feel more comfortable pushing it once I have the VEMS in place and some measure of tuning knowledge with it. Dyno around here is none existent. I'll have to look over in CT for one that's not more than an hours drive. I'm hoping to get down to Raceway Park for at least one set of 1/4 mile runs this Fall. I'll just have to very careful launching softly is all - easier said than done when you're watching the lights, of course!
dublin14
What size injectors are next.
