MrCain
Planning to go to Raceway Park in Englishtown NJ tomorrow afternoon. See if I can get some reasonable numbers without getting competitive with the other cars this time - since that led to an exploded BG & left axle last time I went. Have to keep telling myself to launch gently Now you're telling it to youre self, but when you standing at the line.....

lookforjoe
Trying to figure out where I can actually fit the surge tank... pretty much needs to go back here - which is a little close to the right muffler otherwise, the billet filter will end up over the AWD subframe, where I cannot access it. I have to shorten the "Y" to bring the fllter under the access panel in the cargo area. . In other news, I melted a piston in my X1/9 today

Zappo
In other news, I melted a piston in my X1/9 today That sucks. I am looking for a different car to autocross next year and I have been thinking of an X1/9.
andyb5
What happened to cause the piston to melt?
lookforjoe
Zappo - I love driving the X1/9 - it really is fun to throw around. Andy - must have run lean - I have a performance cam, shaved head, etc - so not stock. It has overheated pretty badly in the past due to cooling system issues which I only just resolved in the past couple of weeks with a custom Howe Racing radiator, dual electric fans in a custom shroud (similar to the Volvo design, but fabbed in aluminum) and switching to Evans Waterless. Didn't see anything on the wideband, but I wasn't really watching it when it lost power. I need to check the injectors and harness - the connectors don't look great. I'm thinking maybe I should convert it to LH2.2, if I can work out the fuel mapping for the lower displacement.
lookforjoe
Had some misfires on startup/warmup - no problems under load, except a little soot. I pulled the plugs to see if anything was apparent - these were gapped at .032" look very even, only issue seems to be #3 coil boot - not sure if some water got in to the well before I switched the coil plug cover back to one without multiple vent holes. Boot is totally supple, so it is apparently not a overheat condition or anything like that. Cleaned everything up, and put in a new set of Volvo plugs ( 0 242 235 749) gapped at .030". Current mileage 171, 575, 17K since build. Did a dry compression test while I was there. #1: 180 #2 : 180 #3: 182 #4: 180 #5: 180. > Previous test Another thing I have found since I rebuilt the motor with the Wiseco's & switched to full synthetic etc - it doesn't like to run 6 quarts of oil. As long As I keep it at 5.25-5.5 quarts, it stays put. If I fill it to six, it just uses it up until it's back to the lower level. I wasted about 2 quarts topping it up on the trip to Montreal/Quebec City. Also had some noise from the rear - one of the helper springs had dropped off the main spring, dropping the right rear & causing a little extra wheel rub. I took it apart, and used stainless ties to attach the helpers to the main spring, all better now.
Martijn_B
Seems like you keep experimenting with the plug gap Hussein? I drove with 0.0236 / 0.60mm, this worked well for me.
lookforjoe
Seems like you keep experimenting with the plug gap Hussein? I drove with 0.0236 / 0.60mm, this worked well for me. With the COP it is able to run a wider gap - better to run as wide as will work. I lowered it to .030" to see if it helped with cold start/ warmup misfire mCEL's. Didn't make any difference - so I'll probably go back to .032". Pics of Cieka BBK
Martijn_B
That looks good, is it the 330 set? By the way, I like the studs on your hub. Is it easy to convert to that?
lookforjoe
That looks good, is it the 330 set? By the way, I like the studs on your hub. Is it easy to convert to that? Yes, 330mm. I would have liked to go larger, however my winter wheel/tire set is 17", and so are my new Enkeis. Have to decide what size caliper to go with at the rear. They have a custom integrated handbrake mechanism that uses the stock cables. Converting to studs is easy - finding a vendor that carries 12.75 - 12.5 conversion studs is the PITA. Kalphenke Racing may be able to get them, at the time I needed them I got them from a place called TulipCityWheels - but last time I checked, I didn't see them on the site. EDIT: Current bumper mods 1
lookforjoe
Installed Kalphenke's M66 heim joint shifter bushings today. spacer washer underneath to allow for high misalignment loctite to make sure nuts don't walk 5mm allen countersunk head bolts to allow for heim misalignment These worked for the past 5 years - cut down Volvo bushing 1378153, but Ben's bushings allow the cable to rotate as needed, much less stress on it.
