Damn H.  I am sorry to hear it's come apart on you.

However, I completely understand why you would part it.  At the end of the day, they are just cars... and when you need a reliable daily, it totally changes the perspective.

I, for one, have appreciate your build from the start.  If you do go the route of the C30... I'll be interested to see what you do with it.

Damn H, sorry to hear about all of this. I completely understand the point about having a reliable daily and as car guys/tinkerers we never stop growing our car collection and modifying our prized possessions. All that said, a tonne of work has gone into the X/R over the last few years. The entire clutch issue was expected based on the kind of torque you were making and the AWD and other drive components requiring service were also realistic given how hard you push the car and the age of the components. I could only imagine how pissed off and demotivated you are when the skirt fails just after your clutch swap. Considering the condition of the other parts though, you practically rebuilt the car after all, do you think it still might be worth it to part it? If the bore is good then a quick rebuild is all you need and the X/R should be pretty reliable for what it is (and it's important to remember what it is, a highly modified/very high output project car). Perhaps if you need a newer/more reliable DD then it might make sense to sell the GT500 instead (seeing as you have less of a financial and emotional investment in that) and get something to replace that (the C30 T-5M or the fiat). Nothing would stop you from using the X/R as a daily once it's running again, but you would have the newer replacement car and the X1/9 as a fall back if something does happen to the X/R down the road.

If you (regrettably) do choose to part the X/R or (preferably) replace the GT500, I would advise that you keep the modifications mild... when we starting raising the output too high on these things all sorts of unexpected problems lurk around the corner and then you need to re-engineer the entire car to keep it reliable (like the X/R). My .02

Hussein, give yourself time to think on this; obviously your call, but we'd all hate to see this legend of a car die..  {:^(

I agree, it will be a sad day if this car gets broken, its a work of art.
But... You have to draw a line on spending time and money somewhere, whether it be now or further down the line

H, i know how you feel. My convertible was down for 3 years before i chose to do anything with it. I was so frustrated with it.

Now it's back together, i enjoy driving it every time i get in it.

If you choose to move on, I'm sure the next vehicle will be legendary like this vehicle.

That is a big ouch but if you confirm there's no cylinder damage those will be great news!

How would a skirt break like that. Defective?

If the oil pressure relief valve was stuck (closed) you were supposed to have excessive pressure when revving the engine and normal pressure at idle I think. Right? But that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems more like it opens at low engine speeds when it shouldn't open (stuck open?).

They would explain the rod bearings wear but would not explain the skirt issue.

Maybe the broken skirt contaminated the oil causing the oil pressure problems through the pump and relief valve.

The Oil pressure issue was on my Fiat X1/9 yesterday  - not on the wagon ;)

The speed shop guy doesn't understand why the skirt would break like that - he says its not easy to break a forged piston. I will have the head off tomorrow & pull two rods & pistons for comparison. Perhaps something went wrong with the wrist pin / small end that allowed the piston to rock, dunno yet.

Mostly apart  - just have to pull the cam cover & get the head bolts out

Inner suface has no cracks - so it must be whatever they coat it with.

Someone had asked how I monitored the CC pressure/vac - this is my port that feeds to a MAP sensor for logging

Pioneering new frontiers leads to pioneering new failures, unfortunately. We are greatly indebted to you and your project, however. I know for a fact that it has inspired me and I'm sure others as well. It would genuinely be a huge hit to the community if we were to lose this car, but not as big as if we were to lose you and your attitude, which it seems that we won't regardless. Thanks You H for what you have done so far and I hope that whether you stick with this project in its current form or transition to another, that you do marvelously and have spectacular luck.

Just saw the past few pages of posts and it is really sad to see. A few months back a rod bearing went on my car. So incredibly frustrated since I had no idea why it went wrong and put me in a really tough situation. At that point I didn't really want to spend my free time taking the car apart and fixing it so I looked at newer cars with a lot less miles. I test drove a newer S60 and just missed the 5 speed. Ultimately decided to drop in a low mileage 03 engine and honestly I couldn't be happier. Maybe once Volvo introduces the SPA platform replacement for the S60 / V70 I'll bite. Best of luck on whatever path you choose. I and many others appreciate all the knowledge you've shared over the years.
