andyb5
Holy shit. What would cause that kind of damage to the pistons? Are the cracks specifically on the intake or exhaust side of the piston, or is there no pattern?
venderbroeck
Those are expensive pistons! It's unacceptable that they would fail like this imo. It almost seems like they didn't hold up against the regular heat cycles any engine goes through in its life. Crazy Edited September 19, 2015 by venderbroeck
SlapShot
That's nuts! Piston to wall clearance maybe? What do the bores look like?
Modman
All 5!!!! Holy sh*t I've never seen that before. Have you talked to wiseco yet?
NB-V70R
Damn... Must have been a bad batch of forgings or something. Regardless, that is unacceptable from any performance piston to fail like that.
lookforjoe
Holy shit. What would cause that kind of damage to the pistons? Are the cracks specifically on the intake or exhaust side of the piston, or is there no pattern? All cracks are on the exhaust side of the pistonsThose are expensive pistons! It's unacceptable that they would fail like this imo. It almost seems like they didn't hold up against the regular heat cycles any engine goes through in its life. Crazy That's nuts! Piston to wall clearance maybe? What do the bores look like?Bores are all within .004mm out of round - in other words, hone would likely do it, except for the scoring on #3 pretty much guarantees rebore, or it will be just a little too loose on the 81.5 piston/ring setupAll 5!!!! Holy sh*t I've never seen that before. Have you talked to wiseco yet?Must have been detonation. All the time I ran the LS9 coils, I had 'breakup' at high load/rpm, which the speed shop reckons must have been knock. He's going to call Wiseco on Monday, and forward pics of the cracks to them to see if they will do anything. Anyway, it's at least 800 for new pistons, 600+ for rebore & misc machine work, valve stem seals, flush everything. Then I need to price all the bearings, oil pump, gaskets & head bolts, etc. I'm gonna figure at least 2K, probably more all told. I'm done. Not going to fix it. My wife is completely fed up with all this too, so that's just icing on the cake, really. So, it's gonna be parted out. If there's anything you want, email me. With all things, it's first come first served. Enem cams are already spoken for. Oil Squirter bent #3bores#1 has also been dumping some oil, that could be valve seals..#5#3 afgaincrack starting. all the pistons have marking on the inside of the head near where the oil passages are - not sure what caused that Edited September 19, 2015 by lookforjoe

Stefan Mohammed
Really sad to see this go :( This car was a huge inspiration to pretty much any custom mod that I ever did on either the S80 or the 850 (basically this car was my inspiration to stop picking up IPD bolt ons lol). I really respected the attention to detail with this build and the lengths that you went through to have great driveability. I sent an email inquiring about some of the parts from the XR. Let me know if those parts are still up for grabs.
Commander Riker
I'm going to ask, though I'm sure you've covered it, I don't want to infer incorrectly. This originally was an 81mm bore, right? What piston and rod combo is this? Different from what it originally came with? Edited September 19, 2015 by Commander Riker
Piet
If this is caused by detonation then there should be damage / heavilly pitting visible on the topsurface of the pistons.I'am not so sure about the detonation theory. It's a real shame this has happened though, but I can understand that you're done with it now.Curious how you are going to modify/ upgrade your future C30, cannot imagine you will leave it standard for long.
VulvaS40T4
My friends has broken T6 engine with similar wiseco pistons. There is design failure on those wiseco pistons and they crack same way yours did. :(
lookforjoe
I'm going to ask, though I'm sure you've covered it, I don't want to infer incorrectly. This originally was an 81mm bore, right? What piston and rod combo is this? Different from what it originally came with? This was originally 81mm bore - oversized to 81.5 for the Wiseco pistons. Short skirt/ long rod (147mm) combo is direct replacement for what was in the '05 2.3l short block I used. My friends has broken T6 engine with similar wiseco pistons. There is design failure on those wiseco pistons and they crack same way yours did. :(That is very interesting. I'll give this info to my speed shop guy, see how they respond to that... If this is caused by detonation then there should be damage / heavilly pitting visible on the topsurface of the pistons.I'am not so sure about the detonation theory.Right? That's how I felt - my previous pistons MELTED the upper ring land from detonation, there is NO evidence of crown/land damage on top Thanks for all the kind words, guys. I really did enjoy this wagon. I would have liked to have had the dyno sheet to show it was over 500AWHP towards the end, but that's OK. DScottM
This is sad. I know everyone else has said it as well. But still. This thing was/is legendary. Best of luck. Out of curiosity would you still recommend short skirts for higher HP applications after recent events?
lookforjoe
Listing parts being sold here in my showroom thread This is sad. I know everyone else has said it as well. But still. This thing was/is legendary. Best of luck. Out of curiosity would you still recommend short skirts for higher HP applications after recent events?I would. Motor felt much better than with the old clunky setup.
