lookforjoe
So if you turn the boost right down it stops smoking? That's some crazy wear. It seems like maybe the thrust loads on this turbo are just too high at your boost/flow rates or something. I mean every time it comes apart, it just looks pounded... I know it's a pain to re-do lines and downpipes and etc, and I know this is kinda lame advice - but before you spend money on more parts and a bigger compressor capable of putting even more load on the turbine shaft, is it possible that it's time to consider something like a Precision billet turbo that's built to withstand 25+psi on a constant basis? Again I hate to say that probably almost as much as you hate hearing it... but that's my thoughts... Kinda have to agree with Captain here Hussein...I think you should get a quality turbo this obviously isn't one. Thanks for the input. As with the first time, if I accelerate up to say 6500 but keep out of boost, or keep the boost low, there is no smoke. it ONLY smokes on decel/shift under WOT/hard accel. I've never seen a seal worn like that, and this time all the other components show no obvious wear. I'm thinking that the lateral load pummeling it took first time around (thrust bearing was wiped) must have worn the seal seat area on the shaft, I just didn't look for that. I really believe that without the excess load I placed on it with the undersize BOV, that it will hold up. I'm willing to buy a new shaft & the compressor wheel/housing before ditching the whole unit & going to Garrett. I do also have the Mellett System steel alloy thrust kit in there now. join the bandwagon hussien, im upgrading from the 20g also You buying that one you mentioned seeing? :D
lookforjoe
Ordered the housing. wheel & shaft yesterday I'm confident that when I remove & compare the two shafts, mine will exhibit wear in the area indicated by the arrow - I doubt the seal seat landings are square like this.. The only thing I can't make up my mind on is whether to send out the new parts for balancing as an assembly.
B Mac
Hussein I'll call you when my Precision comes in the mail....I think it's a perfect pair for this motor. Boost will come in at 3k and full boost by 4k with the billet wheel and a .63 hot side....plus, you'll have to come tune the damn thing for me anyways :P

Good luck my man Well the shop that's building my engine (CCE) won't let anything slip. Greg won't settle for anything less than perfect.....only way something will break is if I screw up royally lol
mdlimy
You buying that one you mentioned seeing? no that guy never responded to my emails, sold the 20g already, ive got a brand new hybrid garret twin scroll t3 hehe, numbers will remain secret until my manifold is done Hope that fixes your problems Hussein, i loved my 20g's boost characteristics but it appears to me they just dont like the beating :(
ozzimark
I love to know how you're pulling off a twin scroll with 5 cylinders. 3 into one, and 2 into the other?

Parts arrived today - I sent them along with the thrust assy. to GpopShop for assembly balancing. Not worth risking another rebuild. Hopefully I'll be putting it in next weekend. Have to weld standoffs on the housing for the actuator, and drill & tap for the pressure port in the meantime.
ozzimark
And the compressor wheel you're going with is good for around 55 lb/min? That's gonna be pretty fun once it spools :D
lookforjoe
And the compressor wheel you're going with is good for around 55 lb/min? That's gonna be pretty fun once it spools The wheel is described as a Garrett 60-1 59/76mm Superback 31.5mm height this what it looks like, I don't know the math to figure out flow Using the same 12 blade impeller, so spool time should be the same, no? ozzimark
I can't find a compressor map for that wheel anywhere. Just an ebay page This isn't the same wheel, but it's a similar size.. Yours will likely flow more, thanks to the larger inducer.
lookforjoe
Got the actuator standoffs welded, and the EBC feed changed the actuator angle to move it away from the outlet, old setup:
Captain Bondo
60-1 is a big compressor. Like 550whp. I wonder how big a td05 turbine shaft is compared to a T3 or T4...
