Wacky Battery

So I'm cleaning the car checking the tire pressure and I check the battery volt level 12.00. It had been awhile since I had cleaned the terminals so I take them off clean them up. Then go to start the car and it will not start. Go back to the battery and its at 10.45 volts. What happened?

bad contact at one of the terminals? Did you spark somethign when you had the wires off?

dont get offended (your most likely past this), but double check your grounds, can your volt meter check resistance?

if so check the resistance between the terminal and the wire, and the - terminal and the ground.

this could also just be a coincidence, and the battery is just dead.

I dont know what the heck is happening now. Before I go to bed last night 12.17. This morning 11.97 and the car wont start. How by cleaning the terminals is my car now magically discharging. I just don't get it.

I don't know how good batteries are in the USA but in Australia they generally only have a life good for two maybe three years tops. You may have roughly 12 volts showing on your volt meter but as your battery is 4 years old I would say it has no guts left in it and as soon as you go to crank it would drop out to 8 volts or less and not have enough to get the starter moving. I would hazard a guess and say your battery was ready for a replacement.

Get it load tested by an auto electrician.

Cheers Dean.

Change your battery...it seems it won't hold a charge. And buy the biggest battery with largest capacity that will fit into your car. Also make sure that battery which you're about to buy is not older than 6 months(from production date).Production date is stamped at every battery.

Get the group 48 when you get a new one. slightly larger with more capacity and cca's, and it's only $5 more. Fits perfectly in the tray.

The battery in my last 850 made it 9 years. It actually made it through the below zero weather we had all last winter and took a dump in the spring.
