It magically died half way through my typing a forum post about a year and a half ago. I called apple support, expecting to be forced to buy a $60 new apple keyboard. Nope. They overnighted me a free replacement out of warranty and all they asked was for the dead one to be returned in a prepaid box they sent. Oh, and it is removable, just requires a bit more elbow grease and tiny torx screwdrivers Dell asthetics aren't what bothers me... it's the fact they use more non-ATX standard components than anyone else, with the exception of Apple (usually). Yeah, it is removable, but still, it should follow the same setup as the regular MB. True, Dell does have their way of messing up the ATX standard. Although what they typically do is just modify the ATX power connector so that the pins are in a different order. Very stupid if you ask me. lookforjoe Posted September 23, 2010 Report Share Posted September 23, 2010 The longevity of Macs & lack of viruses is worth it for me - at school I have 20 2001(!) iMacs, 15 2005 12 & 14" iBooks, a 2005 G5 that I got through various local committees for my art classes, and they all still work (running CS1, & OS10.4). No money to upgrade, I'm not sure PC's of similar vintage would still be usable... At home I have a '05 dual G5 (last of the PowerPC's), and old G4 tower and 2 iBooks which still do everything I need them to do. The ONLY reason I have a PC (laptop) is for TurboTunerUSB & Logworks! My G5 was one of the first Gen (dual 1.8) and it is still damn fast, and I use it daily. No, I have the one prior to that, I personally don't like those as much... not long enough or loud enough of a keystroke for me.And Dell screws up alot more than the power connectors... I haven't seen anything decent out of them in a while except the XPS. Longevity? My 386,486, K6-2's, P2-400 machines all still work.Socket 7 for life? I don't get where people come up with these benchmarks for Macs...None of my computers are dual cores, not even my IBM laptops. I'm living in the past yo I still actively use my 1.33ghz Athlon...SDRAM is still a marvel . For that matter, most electronic components will only have a ~ 5 year life, especially most of the caps used on the mobos. They will leak, its just a matter of time. I don't think Apple products are immune to this. I have a funny story i was told about 'lack of viruses' on Macs...one of my friends works in a tech center. He is a CS major so he *knows* what he was doing Anyways, he Gets a call up. SOMETHINGS WRONG WITH MY MAC OMFG!!!! He goes well do this do that bla bla bla...Nothing really gets it. So he says try this, its a virus scanner. The lady freaks out and goes "I OWN A MAC I CAN'T GET VIRUSES!!!!" derp a herpa derp. It was a virus. I'm not going to go into security issues with windows cause we all know they are there, but, the idea that Mac's are immune is a common theme by the fanboys. No computer is immune as long as it has some form of I/O. On a lower note: I currently have an Iphone 3g apart...guess what? I am going to have to reflow it to fix wifi. idk there is some filter which could be to blame as well, but it is not the antenna connector Whether this is caused from excessive use or poor design, IDK, but its a common problem apparently. While under warranty, Apple by far destroys any other company. The stories i hear of people walking into an Apple store and getting a new iphone or new computer etc is awesome. If Motorola would do that for me...i'd give them a hug..(maybe 'google' stores will exist in the near future?.) But, being that its out of warranty, it leads to the question: how long do these products really last? The IPhone 2G i have still works perfectly fine, while the 3G doesn't? Their marketing department has shown that you can bring it back in and get a new one under warranty etc etc...and it is quite impressive that they can run an operation like that. I'm curious if at some point they let their QC down, that this would lead to their demise? The iphone4 has done a good job holding up, other then that initial signal loss problem...guess we will see how the iphone5 fairs? I know this is way off topic, but who want's to start a thread on IOS vs Android...that would be hell (IOS would win currently) lol. And can someone please tell me where this idea that the touchpads on the Macbook are superior to everything else? I play games on my IBM T43P's touchpad...what more do you need? LOL...i'm hearing it everywhere now, and i'm not sure why..i never use an external mouse with my computers, my netbook even here has a raised bump touchpad which works perfectly fine. Do you mean the hardware lasted longer, the OS didn't need to be wiped clean as is commonly done with bloated spyware-infested PC's, or you didn't have obsolesce problems? Sorry for the zero useful information, Im not the most technically person when it comes to computers. And what I was trying to get at it is the quality of the hardware last much longer. To say the hardware lasts longer would mean that it still powers on every day, the display didn't crack in half, the hard drive didn't die, the touchpad still works, the headphone jack didn't break etc. Not really an issue of it getting slower over time. That's a software issue (as in XP or OSX, or your use of the operating system) or possibly the device becoming semi-obsolete over the years.That right there shows you have no understanding of computers. The both use the same hardware.. Its the OS thats different. I have 3 PC's that run Mac.I think this is misunderstanding, not a technical issue. I meant by different hardware that a different company made it, to a different quality standard. So his PC's might have had cheap components that failed and needed to be replaced. I forgot about this thread from so long ago... that I started. lol I am now a network admin for a school district... and take care of about 800 iMacs, 400 MacBooks, 700 iPads, and some other things. Running 6 Apple Xserves, and while I have about 12 PC/Linux servers, the Apple servers are handling most of the loads. I laughed when I posted my MacBook Pro having 10.6.1 at the start of this. I miss that O.S. I currently have O.S. 10.8.4 installed on a 512GB SSD, removed the optical drive and replaced it with a 500GB SATA, 8GB of ram, and it's trucking along. The longevity of these machines are pretty good, but Apple is starting to loose me with the way they end support for things. That being said, the developer conference is next week, so alot has yet to be seen. Not a fan of Tim Cook at all, so I'm just hoping he won't muck things up further. I have 3 PC's that run Mac. Well yes and no. If a billet aluminum unibody chassis and glass touchpad aren't hardware, what are they?? But I get that your only taking hardware like the processors, memory, and hdds they run into consideration. Don't forget Apple also invented the LI-Po battery with square cells instead of round for increased energy density... Thats definitely hardware lol. Piston Slapper Posted June 25, 2013 Report Share Posted June 25, 2013 I much prefer PC nowadays for being able to upgrade by just throwing in a new mobo/cpu or graphics card, very rarely is there a reason to completely replace a machine. While apple customers are being forced to shell out thousands for substandard hardware in a shiny new apple box. Same deal with phones now, Android phones kick the crap out of the iPhail, both in hardware options (physical keyboard?) and being able to use software that isn't rubber stamped by the apple store fascists.
