CO2 is a necessary gas for life. The Smoky Mountains are smokey because....? All the damn oak trees are emitting CO2. Cut all those trees down. Now. Until China and India are spending what we spend on environmental protection there is no real discussion.

I am a test engineer who worked with the National Weather Service for about 12 years. I am an expert in certain kinds of metrology, the science of making measurements. I am very familiar with many of the problems with making accurate measurements.

One hundred years ago, the mercury thermometer was the instrument of choice for temperature measurement. Take a good look at one. What is the smallest change you can detect? Probably 0.5 degree, and that doesn't take into account the accuracy of the thermometer or any confounding external effects. Omega (www.omega.com), an excellent company for measurement equipment, sells an instrument whose best accuracy is plus or minus 0.3 degree F, so a rise of 1 degree could be anywhere from 0.7 to 1.3 degrees. One hundred years ago, cities were small and spread out. Cities are hotter than country. My house in Wolcott tends to be 5 degrees to 10 degrees cooler than Hartford. Expanding cities make temperature measurements appear hotter. A century ago, there were very few measuring stations, making it very difficult to correlate the old measurements with the new. In addition, for there to be actual warming, the whole earth must be getting warmer, but we have no way of knowing that because we don't have historical data for most of the earth, and urban spread and inventions such as air conditioning confound the data we have.

In other words, a rise of 1 degree F is in the noise of our measurement capability and therefore meaningless.

Other points to consider:

During the period known as the Little Ice Age, which ended about 1850, there were crop failures and snow in July in temperate regions. Some of the 1 degree rise must be attributed to the end of that unusually cold period.

Greenland ice near the ocean is receding, but inland glaciers are getting thicker. The receding ice has exposed the ruins of a Viking farming community. We still can't farm Greenland, so it must have been warmer 1,000 years ago than it is today.

When the Romans invaded England 2,000 years ago, they grew wine grapes. English farmers are just now trying again. Therefore, it was at least as warm 2,000 years ago as today.

Carbon dioxide re-radiates heat; it doesn't "trap" it. Since it's up in the atmosphere, that means more than half of that heat gets radiated into space.

Norway has dredged a lake above the Arctic Circle and found the remains of vegetation. That means it has been much warmer than now.

There are many more polar bears now than there were 40 years ago, and they don't need sea ice to survive.

Al Gore, in addition to being a well-documented liar, is going to make millions on cap-and-trade if it passes.

There is no such thing as "settled science." Science doesn't work that way.

you bring up some good points, but you have to admit to yourself that warm periods hundreds of years ago were not caused by the rapid industrialization of giant States like the USA, China, and India. it was natural back then, we are heavily influencing it now. before, warm periods ended and cold periods started because there are natural systems that regulate. look at the iceball earth was 600,000 years ago and the volcanoes that emitted CO2 to warm the earth up again. then the forests and ocean soaked up the CO2 and balanced everything out. well, the oceans are still here but forests are disappearing. we are upsetting the balance and you can't deny that.

also, on a side note. no one has mentioned global dimming. before catalytic converters and people caring, we polluted the atmosphere with a ton of particulate which blocked out a good percentage of the sun (according to many studies by farmers worried about their crops and german scientists that confirmed this). so at the same time as "global warming" you had "global dimming" and they were to some degree canceling each other out temperature wise. now, with emissions laws like the ones all of you californians love, global dimming is disappearing. you have to ask yourself what will become apparent over the next 25 years because of our clean air acts and our relative inaction on moving forward from the use of fossil fuels.

Yes, I have read alot of that info and I truly believe that these powerful people which are in control now and have been for a long time are using global warming not to just make more money but to gain more power. Why is it that the freedom to arm yourselves is always being questioned these days. Maybe we might revolt againsts the governments of the world, why did many countries walk out on the Copenhagen meeting, because its all a hoax. Anyone see Bin Laden's sons interview today, now tell me that is not a fabrication and full of propaganda to scare us even more. Personally, as soon as I saw the Haiti earthquake and all 3 presidents come out, I smelt something fishy, like HAARP.

Hahaha, the largest tax ever known to man. Nice read there. The problem is that whenever they make these reports, many scientific facts are usually removed or changed. I just don't believe the media anymore, stopped watching television 4 years ago. Look at the war on drugs, the changes in stances regarding hemp and their falsified reports and especially trustworthy presidents like Nixon who shredded many documents. They make great deals of money through enforcement and drug testing yet they are the largest drug dealers in the world. Sorry to be off topic.
