I'm not saying that it's directly related, but... Pre-Volvo: Post-Volvo: well from what i've heard they'll still be built in sweden but the ones for the asian market will be built in china. and maybe the performance and mileage will go up. example. skyline gtr, nissan gtr, it could go either way but atleast its out of fords hands. thats why american car comapnys suffer cause our emissions and mileage are to bad to be sold over there. and to say that cause its made in china or japan you wont buy it just makes you sound like a dumb a@@. look at your trans along with plenty other parts on your car that are made over there. china has got to be doing something right besides cheap labor to produce pretty much everything you own. so dont go believing everything you hear like that hoax about global warming. merry christmas every body. jk and i'll take asian quality over mexican quality. cough cough vw!!!!!!! who cares who owns them thats like saying the camaro is a american muscle car when it was designed in australia and built in canada. " sad trumpet noise" There are already factories in China churning out Volvos for the chinese market. They have been building and sourcing parts in China for a few years now. The difference is that these Chinese sourced and manufactured Volvos have only been for sale in the Asian market. All of the Ford-Volvos for sale in North America have always been built in Europe. From what I hear, that is going to be one of the hot topics within Volvo in the upcoming years...whether to continue to maufacture cars for the North American market in Europe, or to start exporting Chinese made Volvos to North America... swedishiron Posted December 30, 2009 Report Share Posted December 30, 2009 I hope and believe Geely will take Volvo further upmarket - if they are really smart RWD will be back in the Volvo portfolio. I could see more upscale Volvos being built in Sweden(and Netherlands?) in small volume hopefully with many customization options with mass market FWD/AWD Volvos being built in China. Volvo should go after Jaguar and BMW and steal the high profit low Volume sales. I think the current S80 could get a RWD biased AWD system and really go after the 5 series/CTS/E-Class market - with a properly promoted relaunch. I personally think the current S80 should be AWD ONLY with a more powerful base engine at least for the North American Market. Shoot for higher profits per unit with increase selling prices versus volume. I currently drive a 1998 C70 and recently test drove an S80 T6 (first gen) and could NOT believe how much the ride floated and reminded me of a 1980's Cadillac - it was NOT confidence inspiring (maybe a set of Bilstein HD would fix much of that). It will still (as of now) be made in the current production plants. However, I will probably avoid new Volvos for the next few years. But then again, I've been avoiding volvo's since the 1998 versions. I'll probably eventually find my dream 97 855R Black/Black in good condition and that will be it for awhile. Just gotta find another brand that I like since I haven't bought a newish car (less than 4 years old) in almost 9 years. But then again, I'm a cheap bastard when buying cars. Not to say they couldn't produce a high quality product, but it's seems to me it's just a different mentality and/or approach there. My guess? Volvo cars will become more affordable, while loosing some quality and safety ratings. Ironically enough, I remember someone remarking that the new S60 looks like it had it's butt influenced by a Japanese car... the civic. I agree, and will try to keep my turd on the road for as long as I can. steve s Posted January 27, 2010 Report Share Posted January 27, 2010 i actually wished honda would've taken volvo, since they annouced that they were going to become the safest car company. their acura lineup has great safety record. our own tsx went thru a 180 spin and the only damage was front and rear bumper cosmetic damage; sturdy little car. we're looking at a new car... and there aren't many choices if u don't want suv but want space to carry stuff.. e class wagon, simple 30k maintenance costs 2k. gl with bmw after warranty expires. maybe audi.. don't want a vw. i'm open to suggestions.. what bugs me is that the 2010 v70 doesn't include a t6 like the ones in britain.. and that the navigation feels outdated... and because of the sale, no direct injection technology from ford's ecoboost motors. isn't it ironic that when ford finally moves jaguar design into the 21st century, they sell it to tata? or even that an india company will now own a british icon. Audi's are more expensive to operate than VW's and their parts are (I believe) interchangeable for the most part, at least on the older cars. My wife's 98 Jetta has audi ringed parts on it. The engines were fine for the most part (sans 2005 V8) under Ford ownership which is expected by Volvo, where they fell down were the transmissions. Volvo went up market (which it need to do) with the S80 and XC90 T6 and shot itself in the foot. They lost tons of repeat buyers and potential new buyers due to all the bad will. Volvo should have replaced every one these transmissions (no charge to the owners) until the cars reached 200K in my opinion as you can NOT put a price tag on good will. Then even dumber in my opinion was to give up on RWD. Look at ALL the sales between the Lexus IS, Catera CTS, BMW 3/5 series, Infiniti G series - a market position could have easily stepped into if they kept funding a RWD platform.
