What Cylinder Head To Use For Best Performance With 2.3L Block?

Putting the VVT cam in the place of a non-VVT cam won't require any blocking on the head, because there is nothing to be blocked on the head, they don't machine the sealing surface and oil passages when VVT isn't needed:

As for the hub itself, it should get pulled to it's fully retarded position during operation if there is no pressure on the VVT gear, but I haven't messed with an intake cam with VVT to know for sure.

That's all good news!

I must have misinterpreted Johann's post on the cam differences.

The only bug-bear of all this will be adjusting the valve lash if you swap cams on a solid lifter head. If you get a used cam, you better get all the lifters in order (to hopefully minimize the need for adjustment) with it, otherwise you may end up buying a full set of solid lifters in order to adjust clearances.

I'm sure you'll get a valve job done on the head you're getting. When they cut the seats your valve lash may change anyway (get tighter). My machine shop was able to adjust the valves for me by cutting the top of the valve stems to get the proper clearance. Didn't need to buy any new tappets. If you got a used cam and the valves are too loose then yes you probably would need to change tappets.

That's the approach my guy said he would use for adjusting the valves if needed - that won't work for people who already have a head installed - which is what I assumed was Neu's situation.

I'm making a table of what engines had what cams on specific years. There will be a list of all the cam part numbers that indicates lift and duration, once we find that info.. :ph34r:

If anyone spots any errors (there must be some :rolleyes:), or has PNs for the spots I am missing, post them up!

Just measured up my cams:

intake duration @ lift

275º @ 0.001"

222º @ 0.015"

153º @ 0.050"

exhaust duration @ lift

286º @ 0.001"

236º @ 0.015"

168º @ 0.050"

I wish I knew what lift the duration on the old turbo and NA cams are measured at... <_<

Edit: these cams. If it's measured at 0.001, the VVT cams certainly have a lot more duration :huh:

NA

Intake cam: 250º, 8.45 mm

Exhaust cam: 252.6º, 8.45 mm

Turbo

Intake cam: 242º, 7.90 mm

Exhaust cam: 243.5º, 7.90 mm

Duration is usually measured at .006 lift.

Can you measure the cams at that lift? You using a degree wheel + Dial indicator?

I don't have time or access to my later heads ATM so if you could give more details on what year the cams are from that be cool.

Well, there is no 05+ B5234T3, they stopped making 2.3l engines after '04 They did, the C70 got them. I'm not agreeing with your PNs based on my version of VADIS. For example, I'm seeing that 6900044 was used in 03+ B5234T9. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring a copy of that excel chart home with me to make changes. <_<:lol:

Thanks Fishey. I'll check them out at 0.006" tomorrow. That is from a 2002 B5234T3.
