Oil Smells Like Gas.

So my only 2 problems seem to be that my cat was blown and that caused my turbo to blow. Everything got so backed up that my car eventually was running wayyyyyyy rich, and wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy hot and so I was dumping fuel like hell.

No wonder I passed emissions with a bad cat, eventually it just melted down and blocked off almost all emissions  , haha. I got underneath the car and hit it but got nothing, I guess I didn't beat it hard enough, but sad to say, the car could've been saved by both my mechanics and myself but we just looked over the simple things  . Now Bay 13, tell me how likely you would've been to make the same mistake as my mechanics and not notice my cat was screwed up the jerk, or to not notice how rich my car was running? Eventually we sent it to this mechanic wayyyyy far away and he told what the problem was, and he actually did something :) .

Hah... I did just that.  Just had the oil changed -- went with the dino until I can figure out if there is a prob or not.  Had a couple other people smell it and they all smelled gasoline too.

I drove for 20 miles or so, and I can smell the gas still, but as you've all mentioned the gas smell will be around for a while.  At least I can now smell warm motor oil AND gasoline.  Since the car is new to me (95K miles to someone else), and running great I guess I'll wait to see how it goes.  When the oil cools, I'll closely monitor the oil level to see if it rises. I suppose it would have to leak a lot of gas to see any diff.

My original concern stemmed from how much noise the engine is making -- not just the clacky lifter noise, but a real metalic sound, almost like a light "chug" or a soft grating sound.  Sounds better under throttle and I can't hear it in the car at all, but I'm a little concerned.  Definitely quieter after the oil change though.

I think the AWD affects the gas mileage, and I was in Vermont where there are lots of hills.  MPG reading goes from 99 on the way down to 4 on the way up.  :)

Thanks for all the input!

You didnt happen to save your oil filter did you ? i would have cut it open to see if you have any metal deposits, which will give you a good sign of internal wear etc.

The great thing about cartridge filters is no cutting! I had a quick look at it, but I'll be changing the oil again soon and I'll give a thorough examination. Also a magnetic drain plug. Where would the metal come from that would cause gas to get into the oil?

I ran a fuel system treatment and my MPG has increased from around 19 to 23! Engine is still very noisy, but I don't think its internal anymore. Having all the belts changed soon and I'm optimistic that this will help.
